After counting nearly 100 percent of the votes, the 68-year-old was able to beat Ebrhim Raeissi, his arch-conservative counter-candidate, with almost 58 percent of the votes.
The election in Iran on Friday was about the future course of the god: Ruhani stands for the opening, Raeissi, the top candidate of the clergy, for the foreclosure of the country. The other two candidates were considered unchallenged.
The election sites had not been closed until night. The Ministry of Interior had extended the vote by several hours because of the great pressure.
More than 56 million Iranians were called to determine whether to give President Ruhani a second term or a political change. The reformer and moderate cleric Ruhani was considered a favorite, but Raeissi enjoyed the support of the clergy and the state media.
Immediately after the end of the election the counting of the votes began. On Friday, voters had formed long queues in the capital Tehran. In the provinces too, participation was lively according to the media.
