Why axing the filibuster is not a good idea!

Hey Democrats who want to ax the filibuster, is it that you truly think you're going to hold a slim senatorial majority for all eternity, or that you just don't care if Republicans regain thd Senate and have no checks?

Because I hate to break it to you, but you're not going to be in power for the rest of time. Republicans could regain the Senate as soon as 2022. But even if you maintain power for another twelve years, your legislation won't have a shred of staying power if it's passed without any hint of bipartisanship. Killing the filibuster will destroy any small hope we have of creating long-lasting, bipartisan legislation in this country.

You can say Republicans forced your hand by being entirely unwilling to compromise on anything. Well, killing the filibuster will only assure that those same Republicans will be able to easily undo any accomplishments you make. Killing the filibuster won't undermine obstructionist Republicans, it'll only undermine the longevity of your own legislation.

And let there be no mistake, you're going to miss the filibuster when it's gone.

Remember how you once thought George W. Bush was the rock-bottom, worst possible president we could ever have? Now, of course, you think Donald Trump was actually far worse. The terrifying reality is that, in this country, we're only ever four years away from the next Donald Trump. Heck, Donald Trump may be the next Donald Trump. You can dismiss the idea of a reelected Trump the same way you dismissed the possibility of his election in 2016, how did that work out? If President Biden doesn't do an absolutely outstanding job over the next four years, he'll face a serious challenge from Trump. But even if it's not Trump, it could just as easily be someone just as bad or worse. Yea, worse the same way Trump was worse than W.

Do you really want to face the possibility of another Trump presidency with Republicans in control under new rules that require only a simple majority? And even if you're optimistic that won't happen in 2024, you can't be naïve enough to think you won't have to face something that bad or worse in the future.

Y'all might hate Joe Manchin if he keeps the filibuster alive. But he very well might save you from yourselves and, when Republicans take back power in a few years, I'm going to be here to remind you that you all owe Manchin an apology.
