In kenya we have elections every 5 years and every election year unfortunately someone ends up dying, either from police actions or rival youth fighting. 2017 was no exception especially considering how high the stakes were, the incumbent didn't want to be the first president to serve only one term and the main rival was looking at his last shot at the presidency since he's been running for president 3 times and according to him he's been rigged out of a win in every election.
The drama of 2017 elections started to unfold even before the elections started. First, there were questions about the company that was issued with the contract for printing ballot papers they were seen to be too close with the incumbent President. Second the IT manager of the organisation in charge of conducting the elections (IEBC) was tortured and brutally murdered. This was after he had appeared on national television bragging how safe and secure the whole voting system is.
Third, after the elections, a petition was filed in the supreme court challenging the results of the election. The court ordered the computer servers to be open so that the court's IT experts can scrutinize them, this never happened the gov. Lawyers and IEBC lawyers came up with some lame excuse why they cant open the servers which led to the Chief Justice to declare the election null and void!!!.
A repeat election had to be done and this time round all gloves were coming off. IEBC started having internal fights and a leaked memo http://chetenet.com/2017/09/07/12-tough-questions-wafula-chebukati-asked-ezra-chiloba/
was circulating on the internet. The chairman also held a press conference telling Kenyans he cannot gurantee that the elections will be free and fair. Make long story short the government forced the elections to happen by intimidating supreme court judges by shooting a bodyguard of the deputy chief justice. The incumbent ended up winning by gaining less than 30% of votes and coercing the IEBC chairman to declare him the winner. Now come 2018 january 30 and the loser of last year sham election swore himself as the people's President and now the government is cracking down 3 tv station taken off air, arrest without warrants...the list is starting to pile it feels like the country is heading back to dictatorship.
