In this time and age, some Nigerians still think that anyone who criticizes Buhari’s government is corrupt and an automatic supporter of Jonathan and PDP. This is regardless of the fact that these victims of their political opinion are compatriots who once fought alongside with them to chase GEJ’s government away.
I also read some sad posts in which young Nigerians who aspire to presidency are crudely mocked on the ground that they either don’t have the credentials of ‘age/experience’, Northerners support or resources to match Buhari in 2019.
These sort of thinking are extraordinary in a bad way and dangerous for the development of our country.
They mirror the ‘who the cap fits’ campaign in support of late General Sani Abacha when opposition voices were either intimidated into silence or hounded out of the country while an unlucky few lost their lives.
Typical of such fanatical movements, a long list of ‘achievements’ are brandished to prove the need for an unqualified support for the only hero.
In Nigeria, this kind of hysteria and political fanaticism has become a cyclical experience- from IBB to Abacha to OBJ and now to PMB. It gives very little space for critical reasoning and finesse in our thinking.
While the claims and counter claims around PMB should be left open for healthy debate, I think we should all be careful with the use we put our liberties to. If we stifle contrary public opinions with our words, actions and body language, it will amount to fueling the primordial desire of the ruling class to place us all under their control by setting us up against each other in pointless mortal combats.
It is not everyone who criticizes Buhari who is corrupt, senseless and hateful. I deem it actually very dangerous to see absolutely no fault in this government.
