Does Trump's "2nd Amendment Comment" Really Matter?

in politics •  8 years ago

Presidential Candidate Trump never stays out of the news long. It's very clear he's using the news cycle to get free publicity and I hate that I might be helping that. At the same time, his suggestion that some of his "2nd Amendment" followers might take care of Hillary Clinton is just so offensive I can't help but wonder why anyone sane would support him?

Ever since the assassination of Robert Kennedy, himself a presidential candidate at the time, the Secret Service has not just served the already elected to the office but also the Presidential aspirants. For a Secret Service member, Trump's comments are not just another soundbite, but truthfully a possible bullet in one of their bodies. There is a Secret Service detail on Clinton whose job it would be to try to stop any bullets that a deranged follower of Trump might send flying at his opponent. Yet somehow I think a berating by even the esteemed Secret Service means absolutely nothing to Trump.

The truth is, there is a hardcore fan following of Donald Trump. And I would really say they are fans: just like baseball or football fans tend to stay loyal even when their team is having multiple losing seasons, there is literally nothing Trump can probably say that will turn their heads. I don't understand it exactly, since I view Trump not as an athlete but as a potential leader of the most powerful nation on earth and I actually think we should have ridiculously high standards of whoever holds that office, but that's the rub. That core following will laugh uproariously at the most egregious and scary things and tell us we just don't get jokes. No one can change their mind.

But I firmly believe, and hope, that a lot of the people who are potential Trump voters are not drinking the kool aid, per se. They are simply actual Republicans who fear Hilary Clinton being in office. Truthfully, a lot of people on the left don't like Clinton either and so the country might have some common ground. As Trump says more and more he is possibly eroding their opinion of him even farther. Given enough time maybe if they weigh their hatred of Clinton and their hatred of Trump, Trump will be the heavier pile of--

I am hoping, anyway.

I am not a Clinton fan either, but the truth is, I don't really fear she'll start a nuclear war, do you?
