Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney has been tipped to join the House of Lords by her mentor, Labour peer Helena Kennedy.

Clooney, 39, has a string of high profile clients, including Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

And Baroness Kennedy, a founding member of Doughty Street Chambers, where Mrs Clooney works, says she’d make a “great” addition to the upper chamber.

“She’s an incredibly bright woman. The only justification for being appointed to the second chamber is if you can bring to it special expertise, and that can be of all different kinds. And Amal certainly has expertise,” she told the Mail .

But she says it’s not likely the high-flying lawyer will be wearing ermine for the moment.

“Just now, she’s got two small babies,” Kennedy said. “So she’s too busy and has lots of cases. But in time, she would be great.”
