Most of my content here are long posts, with multiple arguments and different points of view if possible, but I'm literally just posting this because when making this graph I realized what I already said in the title, so I wanted to share that.
Whether you believe climate change is real or not (and BTW it is), most people aren't aware of this fact, and just - like me - naively assume that surely it has become better, not worse, right? Well, worse is the answer, and this is just the rate at which we EMIT CO2 into the atmosphere, THIS is how much is already there:
The goal should be to go back to approximately 1960s levels, and just by not changing anything we are headed exactly in the wrong direction. Even if we were to change course in terms of CO2 levels right now, and start sucking CO2 out of the atmosphere at exactly the same rate that we have been putting it in over the last 10 years (2.3ppm/year), it would still take us 37 years to get to 1960s level. That would be by 2055. But realistically it would take at the very, very least 15 years to get carbon neutral and another 15 years to get to sucking those 2.3 ppm out of the atmosphere every year. So realistically, the absolute first point at which we could possibly be at 1960s level again is about 2085.
