Remember when Trump suggested injecting disinfectant?

You undoubtedly have heard that President Trump asked/suggested that COVID-19 could be treated with disinfectant.

I dont want to debate what he said. In fact, I hope you can divorce your feelings/thoughts from the actual statement that caused them. I want you examine your inner thoughts regarding this statement.

At first, you probably can't even formulate a response. The idea of injecting bleach into yourself is so obviously wrong, how could anyone suggest it.

Next, you probably think why is this guy President? How could anyone vote for him when he is so obviously stupid?

Okay hold those thoughts. Embrace those feelings and follow my trail of thought..

That is the exact feeling and reaction I have when people suggest we raise the minimum wage. Raising the minimum wage hurts the very people it's meant to help. Imagine yourself as an employer facing a rise in operating costs. Are you going to be hiring more people in the future? Probably not. Are your customers going to allow you to pass on the added cost? Maybe. Ultimately, your employees will be affected by the answer to these questions.

I have those exact same thoughts and feelings when I hear/read about raising the minimum wage.

Barack Obama was very proud of his signature legislation, Obamacare. I had the same feelings and thoughts when he talked about his program.

If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. Why didn't anyone realize that physicians were tired of the bureaucracy and retire.

"We will bend the cost curve", Obama claimed. Each family will save $2,000/yr we were told. That didn't happen. And it's no surprise. He added benefits to every policy that raised the cost. As it was playing out, I thought why doesnt anyone see this? Then he got re-elected!

He was very impressed with the on-line insurance marketplaces Obamacare put in place. He acted as if this were a new thing. I was speechless because I had purchased a family plan, on-line for $800/mo 10 months before Obamacare was enacted. I managed to get a new job where my employer provided coverage but my old insurance sent a renewal notice - I would have had to pay $1,200/mo.

How did Obama get re-elected? How could he say these things and get away with it?

I get the same feeling when people talk of stimulus packages. It started with the "dotcom " bubble. How could anyone support such a thing? It will distort the economy in ways we cant anticipate.

Then we found out where the distortion was in 2008 - the real estate market. I argued with anyone that would listen that another stimulus would have dire consequences in the future because it would further distort the economic insentives. Rather than learn the lesson, everyone clamored for an even larger stimulus in 2008. I was incredulous. How can anyone support this idea after what we just saw? This time the distortion caused a stock market bubble. Luckily for the Fed, this crisis came along to hide their complicity in the plunge.

That feel you get listening to Trump suggest injecting poison, yeah, I'm very familiar with it.

Of course, I'm so familiar with it that I've become numb to it. Now that Congress has authorized another stimulus, I'm like . . .
