Any law or rule trumps the right of the individual to be free, and that's not always a bad thing. Why should people be free to do things that hurt other people? From the perspective of a murderous person, the law prohibiting murder is "tyranny."

Your rights as an individual to be free stop at exactly the point where they infringe on another's right to be free. Hence, there is no need for a "law" amongst moral humans.
Unfortunately, "laws" are just made up by violent gangs, who claim that they have the right to infringe on everyone else's freedoms, "for their own good".

Yes, if all humans were moral we wouldn't need laws, but unfortunately, that's not the world we live in. People do bad things that hurt other people, and laws are needed to prevent harm and punish people who cause it.
