Jerusalem has always been the prized land of the papacy pursuant to Catholic replacement theology; that is, the teaching that the church has replaced Israel and the true Jews now are the adherents of the Christian Catholic religion, and therefore the promise given to the Jews to inherit that land is actually ceded to the church. This doctrine was the basis for the crusade in the holy land:

On this day in 1098, the Siege of Ma’aarra, a long and infamous siege during the First Crusade in which some Crusaders massacred and feasted on their Muslim enemies, took place in the city of Ma’aarat al-Numan, in modern-day Syria...the Crusaders poured over the walls of the fortified city on 11 December, leading the Muslims to retreat within.

There is a building named after Bloomfield on the St. Francis Xavier campus called the Bloomfield Centre. Bloomfield was trained by Jesuits at St. Francis Xavier University on the doctoral level as well as at Catholic St. Thomas University.
As revealed in the early 1990s, under the Fundamental Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Israel, the Vatican wants Jerusalem internationalized under the jurisdiction of Rome:

This is what is happening with the Israel/Palestine conflict.
