Is WikiLeaks The Most Trusted Name In News?

in politics •  7 years ago

There have been numerous #FakeNews reports on all sides of the political realm over the last 2 years. Almost every major news outlet has had to confess, retract and apologize for misinformation and in some cases, straight up LYING to the people of the world. This really seemed to explode during the the 2016 United States Presidential Campaign.

This tweet by WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, really got me thinking. Is WikiLeaks now the Most Trusted Name In News? That was a title once held by CNN. But those days are long gone. The New York Times and Washington Post used to be the papers of fact, but those days too are over. The most celebrated conservative television channel, Fox News, has had their own issues. NPR (National Public Radio) was once at least not 100% tilted to one side. Reports of thousands of #FakeNews stories on Facebook and Google are out there.

So with all of this, where do we turn for accurate and honest news? I can’t find anywhere that WikiLeaks has done any false reporting. And it's kids crazy. A few years ago our Government made Julian Assange out to be a monster and a National Security threat. But now he may be more credible than cable news, print media, radio, and social media.

Definitely not. None of the leaked documents have ever been fakes, but I would say that applies to most media organizations. When is the last time another media outlet published documents that they claimed to be authentic that turned out to be fake or forgeries?

Wikileaks isn't trustworthy for so many other reasons. They pretty clearly have an agenda that they push with the documents they publish. Further, plenty of the things they tweet (both from the Wikileaks account and Julian Assange's personal account) are wrong or at least misleading and certainly designed to push a biased political agenda.

Perhaps they're a trusted name in leaked document publishing, but that's about it.
