Republicans Again Trying to Destroy Democracy By Shortening Voting Hours In Atlanta

in politics •  7 years ago

Voters in Atlanta would have one less hour to cast their ballots under a bill that cleared a subcommittee Thursday.

The bill was filed by Republican Sen. Matt Brass after Democratic Sen. Jen Jordan won a special election in December to represent a district that covers parts of Atlanta and Cobb County. Voting in Cobb County ended at 7 p.m.

Brass said “All the people in the city of Atlanta have a one-hour advantage on the rest of the state, we’re trying to get a little more uniformity.”

What a joke, they want to get uniformity...? No, they want to destroy democracy and make it as hard as possible for people to vote! People have to work all day and they are expected to make it to the voting polls right after work. We should have a national holiday for voting! Everyone in the country should get two days off from work every year so they can go vote, that is how democracy works!!!

As we talk so much about "corruption" and wars, there is not enough talk about the greatest crimes against America -- namely, those who would routinely game elections for the purpose of maintaining power.

There is a long history of such gaming.

Richard Nixon, for example, first claimed that JFK stole the 1960 election. Then, his team did recounts. They found that the count was good, so they stopped. Nevertheless, they have been promoting the myth ever since that the 1960 election was stolen.

In 1968, Richard Nixon sabotaged the Vietnam peace talks even while Richard Nixon was claiming that he would end the Vietnam War. Once in office, Richard Nixon expanded the war. The war did not end until after Richard Nixon was forced to resign for some of his other dirty tricks more than six years later.

In 2000, a partisan 5-4 Supreme Court violated so many precedents to federalize state election law and stop the vote count, thereby installing George W. Bush into office.

Following that, the Help America Vote Act, the "red shift" of exit polls not matching official results, the extreme gerrymandering, voter ID laws and other election restrictions that targeted Democrats with "surgical precision," the overruling of a critical provision from the recent reauthorization of the pivotal 1965 Voter Rights Act, the 5-4 conversion of money into speech, etc., all reveal a scheme of antidemocratic, antipeople, and Unamerican activities to take away our most basic right to vote for government accountability.

And for what do Republicans try so hard to undermine the American majority?

To deconstruct civil society, and especially the reforms of FDR's New Deal and Lyndon Johnson's Great Society that created our robust middle class.

It makes perfect sense that a party who has utter contempt for our right to fair representation is also a party that wants to turn back the clock to the days of oligarchy rule -- specifically the late 1800's when three oligarchs (Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Morgan) held overwhelming power.

Yes, the American voting system is a complete failure, in order for America to be anything close to a democracy the voting system has to be completely changed to a ranked based voting system and we need voting holidays so more people can participate in the voting process.

We need so many changes but I think we're fighting a losing battle, Sessions is head of DOJ FFS, so voters' rights are further eroded. Citizen's United pute a stake through the heart of democracy, which is a funny analogy because it wasnt a vampire before that. Now we are the walking dead. We need federal policy dictating rules for all 50 states and let the states rights people scream till they die because their whole agenda is disenfranchising the black vote. But the GOP have a firm grip on the process and that means game over.
