UN efforts see release of more than 300 child soldiers in South Sudan

In somewhat uplifting news, the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has reported the liberation of 311 child soldiers, with an additional 700 to be released in the near future. The kids were given kits containing school supplies, clothing and mosquito nets. David Shearer, head of UNMISS, highlighted the importance of family and friends welcoming them home without any sense of stigma.

South Sudan seceded from Sudan in 2011 after a referendum. By December 2013 a civil war broke out between President Salva Kiir Mayardit and his former Vice President, Riek Machar. Child soldiers on both sides of the conflict were just one of the consequences.
