Today, 17 December 2017 is a very important day among those who follow politics in South Africa. The ruling party was engaged in voting for their new president to replace the outgoing Jacob Zuma who will be stepping down. Cyril Ramaphosa beat Jacob Zuma's wife to become the new president of the ANC.

A. Urbanisation
South Africa is urbanising rapidly: 63% of South Africans are already living in urban areas and the statistics will rise to 71% by 2030. By 2050 eight in 10 people will be living in urban areas and this will increase demand for basic infrastructure requirements. Given this reality, the government has developed an integrated Urban Development Framework (UDF).

B. Health Care
Public healthcare funding accounts for 12% of consolidated national spending and is growing. The Financial and Fiscal Commission (FFC) told Parliament that despite this expenditure, poor-quality primary healthcare services and the growing incidence of no-communicable diseases (NCD’s) crippled the system.

C. Violence And Safety In Schools
Briefing Parliament about safety in schools, the Department of Basic Education said school violence is common and a reflection of social issues. It distracts the Department from its core business of teaching and learning.
Rates of bullying are incredibly high but this is being dealt with. The focus is on physical, cyber and homophobic bullying.

D. Informal Settlements
The number of informal settlements is growing. There is also minimal capacity in government to implement informal settlement upgrading efficiently. The Department of Human Settlements made these startling of Informal Settlements Programme.
