I think it's very strange -- what is going on in USA just now: fighting with monuments. Antifa and another leftists oppose to monuments for some people who had slaves, and they has ruined one (or four?) of monuments with great pleasure.
Here in Siberia we have installed the monument for last russian tzar Nikolay II with his son, which have killed after russian revolution in 1917. Nikolay was an ambiguous person and just now there are no consensus about him in our society -- for example, churchmen consider him a saint, and commies hate him.
So, several days ago one man took a ladder and an ax and go till this monument under cloud of night. He damaged the monument and was catched with police. Of course it's a weak analog of american events, but I think the motives are the same.
I think every monument is a document of the era, so it is interesting by itself. You can change your mind about slavery or another things, but monuments make not propaganda for some ideas -- it's just historical artefact. Maybe add a placard with special explanatory text, but not destroy it.
P.S. The only exception is admissible when you get revolutionary situation: for example in Ukraine they have dropped down a lot of statues of Lenin, stayed there after USSR era, but in fact I believe he wolud be satisfied, if he colud see it his own eyes.
