Everyone largely agrees on reducing prison sentences for non-violent offenders that have a low risk of committing another crime. Not so with prisoners in for violent crime with low risk of reoffending.
And unfortunately many think a lot of our prison population is incarcerated for drug offenses. So there's a big disconnect. People want to reduce our prison populations, but in practice they are against reducing sentences for the main group of prisoners.
This is why Pfaff says we really have to confront how we handle incarceration around violent crime in this country. And how we think about prison in general. The US is a big outlier here.
