Air Pollution Masks: The New Normal? Or Just a Regrettable Necessity in Today's World?

in pollution •  7 years ago  (edited)

"So you think smoke is your ally? You merely adopted the smoke. I was born in it, molded by it. I didn't smell clean air until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but choking!” Okay, Bane joke quota fulfilled. Serious mode activated from this point on.

I woke up today, after a week or so of clean air, to yet more smoke and ash. I thought we'd seen the worst of it, hopefully this is the last hurrah and there won't be more after this. I was prepared however.

I knew of pollution masks from having info gorged on China while researching their widespread use of ebikes. In classical Chinese government fashion, they first encouraged the uptake of ebikes to combat pollution in cities...then banned them because they proved unsafe (they require no license). Make up your mind, right?

source

Air pollution is such a problem in Chinese cities that filter masks aren't just a utilitarian necessity, they've become a fashion statement. What does that say about life threatening air pollution becoming the status quo? I don't know, but some of these masks are neat looking as all getout.

source

This is just a band-aid, isn't it? The real problem is pollution. Fashionable pollution masks don't solve that problem, only distract from it and allow us to ignore it for a little while longer.

Is this the shape of things to come? I don't think so. China is aggressively curbing air pollution and building solar panels, wind turbines and even new generation nuclear power plants at an impressive rate.

source

I read a science fiction story once where a young boy travels to the future. The air stings his eyes, and makes him cough. It's because of the exhaust from a huge factory. He asks the owner what the factory is for. The owner says "It makes pills for irritated eyes and coughing." Problems that wouldn't exist if not for the factory.

Of course it isn't that simple, and there exist natural causes of illness that man-made medicine is necessary to treat. But it does illustrate the basic principle that humans cause many of the same problems which we then sell each other the remedies to. Like throwing a brick through someone's window with an advertisement tied to it for your window replacement company.

I'm glad this isn't the future we've chosen. The movement these days seems to be away from coal and towards cleaner sources of energy. It's a shame things have to get so bad that we can't breathe before change happens, but better late than never.

Which do I recommend? I haven't tried enough to say. This is the one I bought and it's working quite nicely so far. Here's a fancy electronic one, and I will say the motorized air pump probably does help as otherwise it's a bit harder to breathe in through these things.

However the long term solution isn't something you can buy on Amazon. It's a lot more expensive and difficult than that. For those on the left it's cap and trade. For those on the right, geoengineering.

I am not a big fan of cap and trade, in my opinion geoengineering isn't enough by itself either though. It'll be that, plus an aggressive shift to all electric transport, nuclear cargo ships, and a mixture of nuclear and renewable energy sources.

The left doesn't want geoengineering or nuclear power because the redistribution of wealth inherent in cap and trade is a goal in and of itself from their perspective, so they don't want any alternatives to exist. The right doesn't want cap and trade because their focus is on keeping as much money in the hands of the wealthy as possible.

They've also mistaken the entirety of climate change for a scam when the only fraudulent part of it is the left's claim that no alternatives to cap and trade will be effective at stopping it.

It's a neat trick, this way you fool the opponent into attacking the scientific basis for climate change (a battle they cannot win, because it's real) rather than the claim that only redistribution of wealth will fix it. They're right to smell a rat, but wrong about where the rat's hiding.

This is a real problem which isn't going to be solved by bickering, divided political tribes. Whatever ideology you subscribe to, unless you're reading this from the ISS, you live on Earth. Is this what you want the view outside to look like in the future?

source

It's true that no single wildfire or hurricane can be directly attributed to climate change (despite certain smug left-leaning memes) because it's about gradual increases to the average frequency of such events over time rather than any single disaster. But something like smog is unambiguously an immediate, obvious consequence of industrial emissions. No sane person tries to claim that smog is natural.

This should be something we can all agree on: Air ought to be breathable. Kids shouldn't need to wear respirators to play outside. It's plain to see that this isn't an ideal state of affairs:

source

This isn't about ideology or old grudges, it's about a tragedy of the commons. It's about our shared living space, the substrate for human life that is evidently more fragile than past generations believed. Something as petty as simian politics should not get in the way of basic planetary life support maintenance.

We're on the right track, the current US administration notwithstanding. Most of the world understands what needs to be done so that future generations don't have to wear a hazmat suit to step outside. Let's stay the course, determined to cooperate despite our difference of opinion on other issues, and keep our eyes on the prize: Air we can breathe without a mask.

@alexbeyman,
Air pollution and our future, yeah respect what you said and absolutely agree with it! You just reminds me a TV series I watched few months ago and still keeping as 2nd best TV series I have ever seen. "Terra Nova"! Not an another world, but people in this world polluted the entire nature and had to live inside of a kind of glass balls. And they determined to go back to the Jurassic Age and colonized again there. So, basically this can be happened in future generations of this world also.
I hate pollution, but people are different and thinking in different ways. Specially political sh!ts, they determined to earn earn earn, no matter what will happen to the future generations!
So I don't know where we are heading to... We will die... but our kids, their kids and next generations... I wish this world should remain better and people will not suffer by natural disasters and will not gain an experience like "terra nova" tv series.
Thank you very much for your excellent writing about the world biggest disaster (that's how I feel it)!

Cheers~

Air pollution is due to human activities.but the development of a country's development is necessary.therefore, environmental pollution can not be avoided.more important is to prevent air pollution.
The more developed the world is, the more artificial gases or gases are produced. but we have to do our best to make a clean environment for the future generations to get clean air.
thanks for @alexbeyman very important post.
upvote and resteem.
have anice day.

Air frustrates me, really. I wish our governments can come up with something that will stop hurting our planet and us as well

@alexbeyman - Oh you have talked about the key disaster of the world. Great. Actually, when we talk about the Air Pollution, this occurs when the harmful gases, dust, smoke enters into the atmosphere. Basically, with the development of the world, environmental pollution happens, because of the human bad activities..
And if this pollution continuous in the current level, it directly affects to the future generations(human population). So we should protect our environment so badly. That is my idea. I would be highly appreciated your great writing on this tragedy... Therefore, I wish to ReSteem your post.

The air pollution mask can be a solution for short-medium term in my opinion. I saw a lot of similar products on amazon.com. As you said in big cities, especially from China where the pollution level is very high. Unfortunately, this affects our life, instead of enjoying the nature, the stone surrounded us. I live in the biggest city from Romania, but the pollution level cannot compare with the Chinese cities level. I prefer to live in a healthier city, with less pollution even I would work for less money :)

We dont like air polutions, but we demand to have better transportations, electricity, technology, and so on. It seems like we care about it, but actually we dont. We just want to get what we want, everything, but dont want to take the risk and be responsible. We keep on pointing finger and blame someone or something else, we forget about how we really are. What have we done to stop the air pollution? Will we stop driving our car, stop electricity? Well, we better think about it. Thank you for your post.

If the cost of lithium batteries can be brought down by a lot, we can still drive cars. We can still have many nice things and use a lot of energy without necessarily increasing air pollution. Of course it pollutes to create batteries, but even then lithium is much cleaner than the lead batteries that were used before.

The maiin thing is to get rid of coal power plants and gas powered vehicles. It seems the Chinese government agrees as they are planning to ban gas vehicles in the coming years. This is only fair if it happens at the same time that electric vehicles fall in price within reach of regular people, but there is a lot of progress towards that goal happening too.

Welll of course there are ways to make this world better, but we can not hope that much. This world is full of conspiration which make money is much more important than someone elses health. No polution in some places are impossible, but decreasing it, a bit, yes, i believe we do. We can not expect people to be like us, and do what we do to make all having clean air though it means nothing. We need the whole world think and do the same.

So, what exactly about ebikes is unsafe in their eyes? Is it just because you don't need a license for one? I find it comical that they've changed their stance so quickly on those, lol.

Also, sorry to hear you guys are still dealing with forest fires. Hopefully that shit is gone within a few more days, man. Not gonna lie though, seeing people trying to take selfies and getting panda masks to look cute has made me die a little on the inside.

This is very sad reality. Masks are uncomfortable especially for people with heart problems. It hard to breath without a mask how much more if I need to wear a mask.

Air pollution is a very serious problem. We should do something. We can't really rely and wait for our governments to take actions. We can do it. Especially people living in China. They can do something about it aside from wearing masks. They can create campaigns and spread awareness to all people who are suffering from air pollution.

We can use renewable or green energy sources. And we can do it on micro level. If only every household will adopt energy conservation, it will be possible to attain clean air again.

every thing is possible to this world ,if we accept and learn to care for it ,
the pollution seems to be increasing everyday we just have to find a way to stop it and get with it not just wearing mask and letting it go under more .
It is not possible by one rather we all should be aware and stand up to it .
Nice article buddy couldn't help but write the comment :)

thx for sharing

we have to use the mask,if we not do that our future will be dark. We will die soon or will suffer from many fatal diseases.

Congratulations @alexbeyman

Air pollution = Silent killer. People panic with hurricanes, earth quakes, but polluted air can kill millions or billions silently and instantly. Excellent article which greets about the real danger.

Post-apocalyptic fashion on the threshold...

Could be that the pollution of the collective brain manifests in our 3D world in as such clear reflection that mirrors what needs to be transmuted in our psyche and consciousness. Air is also symbolic of communication. How are we communicating with our fellow humans? how clean are these vibratory messengers? how aligned are we to our truth?

@hodafadel

Nice post!! really helpfully article

Strongly agree with what you describe @alexbeyman. Approximately 600,000 children under the age of five die each year from diseases caused by outdoor air pollution or indoors, especially in poor countries.
About two billion children live in places with outdoor air pollution, mostly in low- and middle-income countries.
"That includes 620 million in South Asia, 520 million in Africa, and 450 million in East Asia Pacific," UNICEF wrote in a report titled "Clear the Air for Children."

Source

Outdoor air pollution is common in low-income countries whose urban areas are polluted by vehicle emissions, the large use of fossil fuels, dust and waste incineration.

Never saw the need here in Singapore since the air is clean.

The only times I wear a mask is when I am sick and at the clinic waiting for my turn.

Singapore runs things very strictly with high governmental control. There are of course certain benefits to that, such as air pollution never becoming as bad as in China (which is already very authoritarian, but not on the level of Singapore) however many people simply cannot bear to live that way. Maybe it will have to be considered if the alternative is unbreathable air, but things seem to be getting better right now without it.

It's always interesting to know how foreigners view us. This recent article by Buzzfeed hit quite a nerve with us:

https://www.buzzfeed.com/atossaaraxiaabrahamian/this-teen-troll-fled-to-the-us-for-political-asylum-now-hes?utm_term=.mlv6j7E1Z#.psPnpEv4V

It used words like draconian when describing our laws haha.

Well, trust me when I say this, it's not that bad.

If anything, freedom to me is being able to walk out at night, feeling safe and not being attacked by racists and other thugs.

I don't view it in such slanted terms. There are pros and cons. Like I said there are outstanding advantages to such a government, it's just not for me.

Got it. To each his own! I'd honestly love to live in the west for a bit myself.

Don't mind but i think this pollution mask is of no use as we will progress further the pollutant's level will increase more than before and the capacity of Body that can handle this level will also decrease along with the use of these masks these are good i guess only for hard session of gym but making and turning it into daily practical life will make no use of it.

Very nice post.thanks for sharing
