"Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule—and both commonly succeed, and are right.”
— HL Mencken
I want to clarify a common criticism we receive when people say "Both parties are awful."
Extremists love to pounce on this and declare their opponents are worse than their allies.
Well so what?
Pol Pot is responcible for the death of 1,000,000 civilians.
Augusto Pinochet had 40,000 civilians killed.
So yes, Pol Pot had 25 times the number of victims, and if we were in an election with those two as the candidates, I respect an argument to vote for Pinochet over Pol Pot.
I do not respect an argument that Pol Pot is worse so we have to walk around like Pinochet is beautiful and glorious and ignore his horrible crimes against humanity.
If you say "Vote for Pinochet because even though he is evil, he is not as dangerous as Pol Pot" we can have a real conversation.
If you say "How dare you criticize Pol Pots opponent" than I will see you as a child unfit for adult conversations.
