Description
The Flag of Poland is a horizontal bicolor with a white upper and a red lower half. The colors originate from the polish coat of arms which shows a white eagle on a red shield.
Blazon
Party per fess argent and gules.
Symbolism
The white half represents the element of water and symbolizes immaculately and purity, while the red half represents fire and blood and symbolizes bravery. Other meanings of the colors are white for peace and, since the communist era, red as a symbol of socialism.
Adoption
As national colors red and white have first been recognized back in 1792. The official adoption of the Polish Flag happened in 1831 and the flag was confirmed in 1919 after Poland gained independence from Russia once again and has been in use ever since.
Flag day
Since 2004 Poland celebrates 2 May as the official flag day. However, it is not a public holiday.
Similar flags
Red and white is the most common combination of bicolor flags. Most similar to the Flag of Poland are the Flag of Monaco and the Indonesian Flag which both use the same colors upside down. Also, the Austrian Flag and the Flag of Latvia consist of white and red in a three stripes version.
