STEEM and STEEM DOLLARS are the internal currencies of the ecosystem. You don't have to put money in the platform, you can pay other people with those currencies as well, but people obviously want to trade between USD, Bitcoin, STEEM and STEEM dollars. That's just the nature of our society :)
