in porto •  6 years ago

Begin its construction in 1881 by the company Société Willebreck, Brussels, of which was Théophile Seyrig, disciple of Gustave Eiffel, and author of the project of the new bridge.

On May 26, 1886, the first tests were carried out on the bridge, subjecting it to loads of 2,000 kg per linear meter of beam. On October 30, 1886, the construction of the arch and the upper board finished; on October 31, 1886, the upper board of the bridge was inaugurated, and in 1887 the lower board was inaugurated, with which the construction of the new bridge was completed.
It was a toll bridge (five "Reis" per person) instituted one day after the inauguration of the upper board, on November 1, 1886, and would only be withdrawn on January 1, 1944, that is, almost 58 years later.

They are not suicidal ... The riverside kids are very accustomed to the river Douro, and if you visit the city and throw a coin into the river, they jump off the bridge to catch it ...
I'm not kidding ... I was once a kid from the river ...
