I was thinking of doing something like that but I use transparency in my portraits. It would be easy to add transparency between the ears and the circle and the outside so the white would be black in night mode!
He already uses transparency so you don't see an ugly square around it in night mode. It is a rather under used feature of images. An artistic choice.
