While hiking in the Sierra Nevada around Santa Marta (Colombia), I crossed path with the Kogi people, an indigenous ethnic group. The Kogi are descendants of the Tairona culture, which flourished before the times of the Spanish conquest. The Tairona were an advanced civilization which built many stone structures and pathways in the jungles. If you hike to the Lost City ("Ciudad Perdida") you may encounter them. Absolutely breathtaking and a must see while in Colombia.

The Kogi people - indigenous tribe with a lot to offer.
The Kogi live deep in Colombia's Sierra Nevada mountains, surrounded by jungle. They are a tribe consisting of 20,000 people. They have lived in seclusion since the Spanish conquest 500 years ago. The Kogi people believe that nature should be preserved, and that we exist to care for the world - a world they fear we are destroying. And who else would know better? They have witnessed landslides, floods, deforestation, and the drying up of lakes and river.
Their number one advice?
Do not abandon your lives altogether. Number one of your concerns should be to protect the rivers as vital for life. And yes, you can do it yourself, it all starts with YOU. The Kogi's view is that all of your activities will have an impact at a larger scale.
Indeed, along their stretch of coastline, you have a microcosm for what is happening in the Caribbean and also on the rest of the planet. So start protecting our planet! I am already doing my utmost in this consumerist society - no car, living small, very limited electricity and gas usage.
As always, all pictures in the photography section are mine and taken with my camera, a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV.
