I met this charming young girl and several of her friends in southern India, in the state of Kerala.

A cup of chai, and several new friends

Behind the beach house where we stayed ran a quiet dusty road. It was lined with the homes and shops of local people. Each morning, I would go to the shop operated by this girl’s family, and they’d serve me a cup of chai. Soon, I was befriended by this girl, her family, and a bunch of her friends.

After a few days, the kids guided me on an extensive tour of their little village, on the other side of the road. They introduced me to many of their neighbours and relatives. Most of them lived in rudimentary wooden homes, but those who were a bit better off lived in newer concrete houses. While all those people may have been relatively poor, they seemed quite content, and in no way did they seem repressed or troubled.

A relaxed life

Kerala is known for being politically stable, and the population of Kerala has a reputation as being both well-educated and politically aware. From my interactions with this girl and the other people in her town, that was more than evident. I can honestly say that they were kind, engaging, intelligent, well-rounded, and genuinely decent people.

In a way, I even envied their simple yet relaxed and quite comfortable life. (That’s not something I would feel about the people in certain other regions of India.)

This entry should definitely make a strong impression on the judges. The portrait is, to be candid, excellent. By this I mean the resolution, the radiance of the innocent-looking damsel and, of course, the peerless brilliance of the photographer.

I'd agree with the first 2, but am not so sure of the "peerless brilliance" part. Still, I appreciate your comment. Thanks!

I will assume you chose to doubt the 3 part to remain humble. Hahaha

Great post, many thanks! :-D

I have heard many things about India, both Good and Bad. I guess I'll have to go there and check it out for myself.

Thanks. In India, there's plenty GOOD and plenty BAD. And a whole lot in between. It's quite an experience, so I hope you can manage to get there.

I guess that's normal... after all, India is one of the most populated countries on Earth. There's room for a little bit of everything.

Or ... A LOT of EVERYTHING!

What a refreshing positive portrait

Thanks for that input. It's great to read another comment that indicates the commenter actually read the post, and had an idea about the post and the subject pass thru her mind.

I have been only once in India and only in Kerala (Cochin, Varkala and surroundings). It looked such a developed place, I couldn't believe about all the rumors I heard about India before!
Also, I have never been in a country where people are SO SO SO SO SO incredibly friendly!

I'd agree with you, but the "rumors" you heard about India might be true about other parts of India. I found the south much more pleasant, and the people in the south much friendlier and open, than in the great central swathe of India from Mumbai thru Delhi to Kolkata.

I have few clients are from Kerala, they are very interested in spirituality.
Maybe that is the reason you feel the kindness there.

Yes, that's a big part of the reason. They all seem fairly well educated, enlightened, and fair.

Interestingly, Kerala has had left-wing (essentially communist, or at least socialist) governance for much of the recent past.

It's not the soviet or Korean type of socialism, but the essential type of socialism that works for the benefit of society. Very rare in the history of political / socio-economic systems.

How interesting, maybe that contributed to the stability of the society.

beautiful story

Thanks, I'm glad when Steemers actually read my text about the photos. ☺

I have come to this post and the picture of this damsel for the fifth time. There is something miraculous about this girl, the fire in her eyes, that endears me to this picture. This is one of your best shots, I should say. The descriptions, too, are fantastic. Keep the good job up, sir.

Beautiful portrait.
Awesome

I would love to meet people in Kerala! So cool how you interact with locals. I was supposed to go to Kerala, but my flight got canceled because of snow in Turkey and I never made it :/

Too bad you could not go. There's no snow in Kerala!

As for interacting with the locals, that's always a great way to enrich my travel experiences. One can learn a lot about mankind / people, by talking to individuals in different parts of the world.

Great story. It reminds me of a short story I wrote a while back about a little Indian girl; I really aught to finish it. There is so much to share about life in other cultures and it is very valuable for all of us. Thank you!

Yes, indeed. Finish writing your story and post it with "fiction" tag here on Steemit. We can't ask for a better platform than Steemit on which to post our writing and photos!

Take advantage of it now, while providing Steemit with great material, and all will benefit in the long run.

Thanks for the advice, I will get moving with that!

A good capture..! 📷

Her ear ring is kind of reflecting her very own culture..!
Happy clicking..!

Yes, in fact, almost all Indian women / girls have some gold jewellery. No matter how poor they are, they'll most likely have a gold bracelet or 2, or a necklace, or earrings. or an ankle bracelet.

that's how much they care and passionate about their culture and belongings...!! 🤗

really nice and great
