This is Lulu of the Black Hmong hill tribe. Her tribe immigrated from China some 300 years ago to Northern Vietnam's Sa Pa. They are known for making cloth from hemp and dying it indigo blue. Most all of their hands were permanently stained from the dyes. I stayed in her village of Lao Chai one night and Lulu was kind enough to let me take this portrait of her.
Great piece of information and photography! Do you happen to know what they used to dye their hemp with? I would have loved to see her hands too...
