When it comes to photography it's important to decide on what you want to specialize taking photos of. Technically you can shoot anything as long as you know the fundamentals of photography and lighting - but different genres of photography require different types of gear and props.
The reason I say this, as things get very expensive when it comes to photography. Hell, a spare battery will run you $50-$80!
I don't often shoot images of newborns but I do have a few props. Here's my baby bird in a nest setup...
