The Smile in Portrait Photography

Why does portrait photography always have to be so serious? The dramatic look--especially when photographing women--seems to be the norm in art photography. There's a place for drama, sure, but a smile brightens the face and welcomes the viewer in a more natural and positive way. The photo still can have impact, as I hope this photo shows. This is my entry for the weekly portrait photography competition.
