1 in 8 Canadian households struggle to put food on the table.
In Canada, almost 200,000 tonnes of food ends up in landfills each year, which accounts for at least $31 billion in lost revenue and about four per cent of the country’s greenhouse gas inventory when it decays.
Fear of liability is the largest barrier that prevents organizations from donating foods.
And yet, "In Canada, no reported court decision has ever imposed liability on industry or any person for problems caused by donated foods." - HER MAJESTY, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of British Columbia, enacts as follows: (Food Donor Encouragement Act - [SBC 1997] CHAPTER 8)
Every month people in Canada are having to make decisions whether to pay their bills or put healthy food on their tables to feed themselves and their families. Whether they are employed, marginalized, at-risk, disabled or seniors, Canadians should not have to make this kind of decision. Canada is one of the richest countries in the world, and there is no excuse for Canadians to go hungry.
Food Banks are a wonderful and much-needed asset for Canadians; and they do the best they can with what is donated to them. But at least here in British Columbia, people registered at Food Banks are only allowed a food hamper once every two months. That is not enough to feed hungry families on a daily basis.
The People of British Columbia, and Canada, Petition for the following:
Bar supermarkets from intentionally destroying and wasting unsold, still edible food.
Require Canadian supermarkets to give unsold, still edible food to Canadian food banks and non-profit organizations that help families in need.
Require Canadian supermarkets to give wrongfully packaged or damaged, still edible food to Canadian food banks and non-profit organizations that help families in need.
Encourage grocery stores and companies to adhere to the Food Donor Encouragement Act; educate them and provide them with the resources they need to regularly donate food to those in need.
Enable non-profit organizations to request food donations from organizations to distribute to those in need without being turned down because of organizational fear of liability.
