The storage solutions are lagging a little bit but are already partially here. I think people have forgotten about solar thermal which is not as efficient as current photovoltaics but is still very competitive even with coal, and can easily be run at night and for up to 3 days or longer if we engineer it for that purpose. If we stagger things correctly we're going to be looking at much cheaper electricity during the day and the coal levels of cost at night. Other forms of storage are starting to get into the competitive range but still either are slightly more expensive than feasible or require changes in infrastructure and specialization to region.
