Walk with me - a sunny day in Aarau

in powerhousecreatives •  6 years ago

Would you like to join me for a walk again? Today, I am going to take you to Aarau which is the capital city of the canton of Aargau in Switzerland.

Aarau is a charming town situated in the valley of Aare to which the town and canton own their name. In 1798, Aarau was Switzerland's first capital city and home to Switzerland's first Houses of Parliament.

Last Saturday, there were several 'Cubes of Truth' organized across Switzerland and a few of them needed some additional support. One of these Cubes in need was in Aarau. We haven't visited this town before and as we had no other plans for Saturday we decided to go there and show our support. To be honest, only my husband was showing the support. I was not able to stand there for 3 hours due to my toothache, so I took a camera and went for a walk...

Aare

I didn't want to walk only in the old city and therefore I decided to start my walk at the river. The Aare is the longest river in the country that both rises and ends entirely within Switzerland. Its clear water reminded me of the Rhine that we have close to our home...

2.jpg
ISO 160 1/200 sec. f/9 38 mm

It was a beautiful sunny day and I was surprised that there were not that many people walking around. It was quiet and enjoyable...

3.jpg

It was enjoyable until I realized that I lost one of my gloves. Yeah, it's just a glove. But this was a special pair that I got at Schilthorn last year. They were so warm and wind resistant. Probably the best pair that I've ever had! I even walked all the way back hoping that I would find it but it was not there anymore. I wonder what would anyone do with just one glove?! 😊 Probably what I am going to do with the remaining one - nothing!

I didn't allow this little misfortune to spoil my day though!

It was funny to see that I wasn't the only one who lost something there. Someone lost or forgot a wheelbarrow in the river! Well, I guess it's much easier to lose a glove than a wheelbarrow, isn't it? 😊

Spring is here!

Spring is knocking on the door and I can't just walk by without taking some photos...

Old Town

Once I walked all the way back and accepted that there is no chance of finding my glove I headed back to the city. Usually I would show you the architecture and tell you something about the history, but not today 😊

Today, I will show you some trash cans! Yes, trash cans! I don't have a lot of information about this project, but it should help to keep the old town clean. If you saw such a trash can you probably would want to use it and wouldn't throw your garbage on the ground, would you? I think it works! 😊

It's a monster and it's pink! Be nice and feed it with some paper...

lol... love the trash cans... I don't know where people come up with these ideas, but its pretty creative actually! And of course there wasn't anyone in your picture, because as I have told you before you it seems like you have the whole country to yourself to enjoy :D

I love that idea too! I think it also should look attractive for kids so that they learn where the trash should go :) Yeah, some people here call me a queen so that would be the case. I call the president when I'm planning to go somewhere and he needs to make sure that the place where I'm heading is empty so that I don't get bothered by anyone :D That's what I call POWER! LOL!

See, I knew it! Its nice (for me) to be friends with Royalty! I bow to your Majesty! :D

Great article, @delishtreats.

Those trashcans are so cute. Excellent artworks!

I am sorry to hear about your lost glove... Maybe you can buy a new one with the money from this post?

Yes, it's an amazing idea! I saw many people looking at them and taking photos. I hope that they also use it to get rid of the garbage :)

Well, it's not really about the money. I just hate losing stuff. I try to have as little things as possible but if something happen I can get very sad. Plus this was special because I got it during a trip in the Alps. I'll probably have to look for another pair for next winter. Hopefully it won't be cold before spring anymore :)

Thank you for stopping by and have a great weekend!

Howdy Martina! was your one bare hand frozen by the time you got back? That is too bizarre, someone must have taken it for sure! Was that an expensive pair? I have no idea what good gloves cost, mine are all taped together with duct tape! lol. It's true.
But anyway, what a gorgeous river! Clear water, no pollution, just beautiful.
Oh, and the trash cans, never seen anything like those, very cute!
This is a wonderful little post.

I think perceiving something as expensive depends also on what you can buy :) They were not cheap.. It ought that maybe a dog played with it and took it elsewhere.. It doesn't usually happen here. Actually on the way back I found 3 other gloves (all of them hanging on different fences so that their owners can find them)

Hahaha, nooo, it was warm that day :)

Most river here are like this. Swiss know how to take care of them :)

Cute?! I didn't know that such word was in your dictionary :D

howdy again Martina! Spring has sprung there now it looks like. Good, No more freezing cold winds and rain?

Oh that's nice that people put lost gloves on fences so that owners can find them. It makes sense that a dog might have run off with yours especially if it had any bling on it like rhinestones. lol.

Hey we have clear rivers. Up in the mountains before they reach civilization! Years ago the river in Cleveland, Ohio caught fire because it was so polluted! But they'd since cleaned it up. It still looks brown but at least it's not combustible!

I threw the "cute" word in just for you because you are correct, it's not normally part of my vocabulary! Makes me cringe if used to much around me! lol.

What have you been doing today and what are the plans for this evening?

Not now and I hope it won't come like last year. It was so cold in April and we even had more snow than in winter!

Hahaha, NO! It didn't have any bling on it :D It was a sporty glove. The one that you take to the mountains :)

WOW! So better don't swim in there, lol. I think we should take a better care of our planet but well.. the only thing I can do is spread awareness about how important it is..

The river can look brown if there is soil in the river bank. It doesn't mean that it's dirty. But I guess that in your case it still is :D

Hahaha, I thought so! I had to read your sentence twice as I was not sure if I saw it correctly :D

I went to the TRX session - not to exercise as I'm not allowed to do it this week because of my surgery but to see some exercises as I'm planning to buy this thing at home. Then I did some commenting and took a nap for 2 hours. Those painkillers make me so sleepy. Now I'm going to prepare some dinner. It's quite late for dinner but we both are not very hungry so it's fine.

And afterwards I think I'll watch some movie :)

What are you planning to do today?

Howdy again Martina! sorry this was 4 hours ago. I had to throw together some kind of post, I hope it makes sense, no videos this time to help me. lol.
Then I had to run to town, pick up some things and fill the car with gas so Mrs. J doesn't have to be concerned with running out. She is on call so we're hoping that she doesn't have to go in this evening, she had a brutal week last week with all that went down. Did I tell you about the big evacuation? Probably not.

But anyway she needs to rest up. I agree about the planet. I know we over here are always improving it. It's at least 100% better than it used to be and there's no pollution smog in the cities like there used to be or very little in just a few. China is the one poluting more than everyone else combined.

What is a TRX session? And what kind of machine do you want? Something to bulk up your upper body so you can punch someone in the face?

I enjoyed this post @delishtreats and seeing that, as you indicated, the winter in your area seems a little bit … friendlier … that it has been “over here” … 😉

”Last Saturday, there were several 'Cubes of Truth' organized across Switzerland and a few of them needed some additional support.”

Hmmm. That sounds interesting. What are ‘Cubes of Truth?’ What is their purpose, as you indicate you were going there to be supportive?

”I didn't allow this little misfortune to spoil my day though!”

Not fun to lose things, but seems like you maintained a good attitude about losing your glove. Especially since you counted it as the best pair you had ever owned.

”Someone lost or forgot a wheelbarrow in the river!”

I didn’t know what to make of this picture, as I would’ve thought someone would’ve gotten it out of there. I also wasn’t sure what to make of painted trash cans either … We have a lot of murals painted on the side of our buildings in many of our small towns, but trash cans?! 😧 Oh well, what do I know … 😊

I really liked the close-up “spring is in the air” pictures. We are not anywhere close to that here, but I count Spring as my favorite time of year. It is such a wonderful time of renewal after winter …

Thanks for letting us “see” some of Aarua!

This year is very warm. We only had a little bit snow here and it was raining before. But now it's sunny and the temperature is very enjoyable :)

You can read more about the Cube of Truth here: https://steemit.com/vegan/@delishtreats/anonymous-for-the-voiceless-the-cube-of-truth :) It's basically showing what is happening in slaughterhouses to general public.

I hate losing things in general but especially when it's something what is really good. I was not happy about losing it but it wouldn't help me to become upset or angry so I just accepted it as a fact. And as the weather is so good this year I don't need them anymore and will have to get a new pair for next winter :)

I was also surprised to see it in the water. You usually don't come across such items in the rivers here but there must be reason why it's still there - maybe some sort of a decoration?

I actually love the trash cans idea as it attracts kids. I've seen many kids walking around and putting there some paper. It's important for them to understand where it belongs as sometimes some parents are not that great in explaining these things and putting it into a visual perspective might help :)

I love all seasons but spring has somethings special in it as everything is coming back to life again. I love seeing all those flowers, lush grass and small leaves. The air is fresh and it's not that cold anymore. It's usually not like this in February - this year is an exception..

Do you still have snow back home?

Thank you for stopping by and for your valuable comment. It's nice to see you over here :)

Okay, @delishtreats

”You can read more about the Cube of Truth here: https://steemit.com/vegan/@delishtreats/anonymous-for-the-voiceless-the-cube-of-truth :) It's basically showing what is happening in slaughterhouses to general public.”

… thanks for the link. I read it. While I don’t share your vegan lifestyle, I can agree on at least part of it (as I understand it anyway …). That is the condition in some of the massive production facilities for producing our food, i.e. slaughterhouses, etc. And the state of them, the general conditions, etc. My focus, however, is not ”the suffering of animals,” but the overall nutritional value.

I could write a whole post about what that means to me, but likely won’t … Suffice it to say, we do what we can here to improve our overall nutrition by supporting local producers, small family farms, etc. Rather than massive, global “mega corporations” … I don’t know, of course, but I would like to think we perhaps might share at least some common interest there …

”… which focuses attention on the faith of the actual animals instead of the people standing there.”

Maybe ”treading on thin ice” here, but curious what this (emphasis mine) means to you. If it helps you in responding, please don’t worry about offending me. Very unlikely … At the same time, if the question makes you uncomfortable, I respect that and will be fine if you would prefer not to answer.

We certainly agree on the marvel and wonder of the annual renewal experienced with every Spring season. Sounds like you have a very mild winter, which we have sometimes. But, at least here, that is generally combined with a lack of the snowpack we need in the mountains for an adequate supply of water. Much of the western U. S. is heavily dependent on getting adequate snow in the “high country.” Many reservoirs have been built to capture as much of it as possible, rather than lose it to “spring runoff” …

”It's nice to see you over here :)”

Yes, back home, I will try to do better at engaging, but I am unlikely to ever be a “top engager.” At least not for the foreseeable future, as I have too many other time commitments … I have always enjoyed exchanges with you @delishtreats, as you are thoughtful and very well-spoken. It is a blessing to me and exchanges with Steemians like you is what “keeps me going” … 😊

I hope that one thing is clear and that is that I don't judge anyone. I truly believe that everyone can do whatever they want with their life. Being vegan for me is actually less about the nutrition and more about animals. I made this choice as I didn't want let any other animal suffer because of my selfish needs. Of course I do keep close eye on my nutrition. I studied several books and I do researches constantly to make sure that I don't miss anything and I must say that I feel much better than ever before :)

This question doesn't make me uncomfortable and I would never even try to offend you :) I do appreciate that you read the article and that you ask the question. People are very often distracted by small things. This event is about the animal suffering and it is not a social event. This is why we are in the 'background' and just stand there quietly dressed in black with masks on our faces so that people don't get distracted by who we are. They focus their attention on what we do. When I say faith of the actual animal I mean death - that is the ultimate result of the meat and dairy industry. Very often people say that this can't be done in Switzerland, that this is not true. They are truly surprised by the cruelty that is happening behind the curtains. We had many people bursting in tears too. I must say that I was surprised that so many people don't realize how their meals come to the table.

As I say I don't judge anyone. But I believe that people must be informed to take right decisions (whatever it is) and this is what we do - we spread the information, nothing more, nothing less.

Oh, we have too much snow in mountains this year! There were so many issues. It was snowing and snowing and snowing.. Now it's finally better and I hope that there won't be any flooding this year once all the snow starts to melt..

I also struggle with my time recently. The more I work on the business plan the less time I have to spend here. And it's going to be less and less and less..

Thank you so much for your kind words! I do enjoy talking to you too :)

Okay, thank you for this explanation @delishtreats. Your perspective is now clearer to me. I can admire you acting on your convictions, as that is not common. At least in American culture. And … I am not the least bit offended or feeling judged … 😊

We come from different philosophical viewpoints and that is okay. “In here” we are adding value to our Steem blockchain, each in our own ways, with adherents to both …

”I must say that I was surprised that so many people don't realize how their meals come to the table.”

We share this in common, although I am sure you have a better foundation of understanding than I, as you grew up on a farm. I have only admired “what it takes” mostly from a distance. I refer specifically to this in my “Big Hole Valley in Montana” post, as people too often take so much for granted …

”I also struggle with my time recently. The more I work on the business plan the less time I have to spend here. And it's going to be less and less and less..”

I take it this is related to starting your own restaurant?

I have always been very open “in here” about the time commitment. In the “real world,” I am very (perhaps too much so …) sensitive to raising expectations that can’t be met … In some ways, if you’ll excuse the expression, it reminds me of time I spent in the past on the hobby of researching family history and hearing, from an expert, that it was …

”The hobby from hell. The better you get at it, the more work you have to do!” 😉

Linked then to another well-known saying (over here anyway) …

”Hobbies cost you money! Businesses make you money!”

With that, on into the rest of my day. With warm wishes for you @delishtreats on your business endeavors and your future success! 👍

I seem to be forever losing earrings ~ But unlike gloves you can always co-ordinate odd earrings. And socks too ~ But odd socks are easy to reuse as rags when I'm cleaning down my table after making art pieces. It would be sacrilegious to recycle a glove like that.

Such beautiful photographs Martina. I'm glad you didn't feel obligated to stay with the 'Cube of Truth' but could roam the landscape to bring it back to us. Both most honorable things to do.

And I really LOVE that people are being creative with trash bins. Bin art is taking off albeit very slowly in Sydney now too. Not in the city, but in one trendy suburb at least. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

I hate losing things. I believe it's something what stayed with me from my childhood. I didn't have much at that time and everything I had I treasured like diamonds. And this is what I do until now :) But I agree with you, it would be great to recycle that one someone. I'll think about what I could do with it.

I would have loved to stayed there but it wouldn't benefit neither myself nor the cube. And walking always helped healing, especially when it's sunny and so warm :)

I like when the artists try to make the cities looks nicer or when they try to help a good cause and this is what they do with those trash cans :)

Thank you so much for stopping by and for your lovely words!

Have a great start of the week :)

I love the trash cans. So whimsical. They do a thing similar to that in one neighborhood here in town. Folks sign up to paint a fire hydrant. Amazing to see all the different ideas and viewpoints. I love the 'chomper' one with the teeth. Got a good chortle out of all of them, but that one in particular. Silly is always No. 1 in my book.

I agree, losing something is such a drag. A waste of a good glove. Maybe there is a lost and found somewhere nearby. But on the bright side, if you ever get a milking goat, you can use it to keep the udder warm. Always look for the silver lining in the loss-of-stuff cloud, I always say.

Thanks for the nice view out and about in that part of the world. Never been, but maybe someday. That is the joy of Steemit though, we get to travel all over the world, from our little computer chair, until we get the chance to board a jet. Cheers, and have a nice day.

Painting fire hydrants is also a great idea! There are so many and they all are ugly so why not making them look better? Do you have some photos? Would love to see those.

Yeah, that one looked a bit dangerous :D I can't imagine a child going there and throwing something into it :D I also prefer silly things as we tend to act too serious sometimes..

That is a good tip! I didn't think about it.. will probably store it until I get that milking goat :D

Thank you for stopping by and for your thoughtful comment! I hope you'll get a chance to come over here. I also enjoy reading various travel posts here. Some of them are so good that they make you feel like were there as well! That's the beauty of internet. You can do so little to see places that are far far far away..

Have a great weekend!

Thanks for the good idea. I need to pedal around and photo the hydrants. Hard to keep up with all the posting ideas that swim around up there (below the hat). There is fascinating things going on everywhere. I hope one day to get to your neck of the woods in the world. Would be fun. Cheers

It's always better to have many ideas than none :) I very often struggle with the latter..

You would be very welcome here!

That is so annoying losing a glove!! It's these little things that you use everyday and you half expect to eventually lose them one day because its so natural when you remove them and you think you had put them in your pocket. I had a really nice pouch which my friend bought me and I used it for my mobile phone so the surface wouldn't get scratched when I threw it in my handbag with the rest of my junk. That lasted me over two years till I lost it in Bologna last year. Like you, I backtracked my footsteps immediately but couldn't find it. Guess some things are just meant to be.

The waste bins are a really good idea. If you have to have something so ugly standing on the streets, you might as well tart it up!! Actually, that reminds me, we have something similar in Taiwan, not waste bins though. I've been taking photos of them all the time. Must post about it sometime.

Yeah, as you said, it's these little things. I kept losing small umbrellas as well and then I got a large one (I am sure 3 people could fit there when it's raining) and I already have it 6 years, lol. You can't lose this one :D

I'm sorry to hear that you lost your pouch. It's even more annoying because you got it as a gift. I hate losing stuff that I got from someone.. but like you said, some things are just meant to be.

Now I'm curious :) You should make a post soon! :)

Have a lovely weekend Pauline! :)

spring seems to have arrived in Ireland too. Wonderful pictures, I love the bins. Sorry to hear you lost your glove, I have lost so many its like my socks, I have to wear odd pairs all the time :-) you didnt find it on your way back no?

It seems like spring surprised all of us this year in Europe. I can't remember that we ever had such a warm February.

I unfortunately didn't find it but well, it can happen. I hate losing things but it happens from time to time. Lucky me it doesn't happen often :)

Oh, so you also have a sock monster at home? My husband has one too! It keep hiding the socks all over the place and then I have to look for them :D

lol I have the biggest sneakest sock monster ever

Wow, you have some really beautiful shots here! I especially love the "wheat grasses", not sure what they are called, but I know the heads feel soft to the touch.

The garbage cans are a fantastic way for them to get noticed and hopefully used!

Thanks for taking us with you on your walk!

Well, I also have no idea what they're called but you are right - they feel soft..

I agree! Unfortunately I still saw some garbage around the city but it was not that bad. Hope that people will use those cans more often :)

Thank you for stopping by! Have a lovely weekend!

You didnt make mistake to take your camera along. These images are wow! especially the one with a floating wheelbarrow on the water

We are almost neighboors: I live in Italy (Tuscany) and also here the weather is good with a beautiful shining sun in the sky.
I think we are in spring, even if this weekend cold temperature could come.
However have a nice weekend!!!
Steem on!

My friend is renovating a house in Italy. Her husband already lives there and she'll be moving there in a year or two. She is very excited about that region. It's somewhere in the middle of Florence and Rome (if I'm not mistaken)..

It's definitely too warm for this time of the year. I'm not complaining though.. just saying :)

Have a lovely weekend!

I live there, between those two towns. I am from Siena. Take a look to Google Maps to have a clearer idea.👍

Cool idea with the waste bins, looks vibrant and different! We have had a different approach in our small city in Latvia, tons of police officers were patrolling the streets and giving hefty finds for even a cigarette hitting the ground instead of the bin. After two decades the town is the cleanest in the whole Latvia 😆

Hahaha, that's an option as well. And I think it works even better :D AND you can see that it's something useful done with your tax money :)

Thank you for stopping by!

So beautiful photos as always... and hehehe someone like you can even make trash cans look attractive XD.

Btw, is your toothache gone? I hope you are no longer in pain ^^.

Hahaha, I can promote them but I would love to be the creative one who would actually be able to paint them. If I could paint, I would paint all ugly things and make them look cool :)

It's much better now. I can still feel it so I'm careful with what I eat not to damage it more but for the rest it's OK. The surgery is on Monday and I'll be eating treats all weekend as I guess I won't be able to eat properly for at least a week after it's removed..

I hope walking and taking these lovely photos helped you forget the pain for a while! Love the trash cans, but don't you wonder what that wheelbarrows story is? I'm sorry about your glove.

Thank you Melinda! Yes, I feel much better but I'm anxious today as tomorrow is the surgery at 8 AM in the morning. I guess I won't sleep all night and tomorrow I'll sleep all day :)

Oh, I would love to know that story! But there was nothing around.. it looked like it was only dumped in the water and left abandoned..

I hate losing things but lucky me it's warm now so I don't need them anyway :)

Have a lovely Sunday!

I'm sure you are nervous about the surgery, but I bet it will go easily and you will realize that there was nothing to worry about. And yes, spend the time after resting and healing and taking good care of yourself.

Congrats on being in the green in the league even when you have not been feeling well this week. Hope you have a lovely Sunday

I wish you were right :) I'll tell you tomorrow..

Oh, I have so many other things to do but I can't focus so commenting is the easiest way to spend my time somehow productively these days :) Thank you!! I haven't checked the results yet but I do expect you being at the top! :)

Have a lovely Sunday too!

Some weeks we all have more time for commenting than other weeks. Its rather fun to see how we all change places in the League results each week!

Steem has been a great distraction for me since my husband died. It has kept me from being lonely and sitting around feeling sorry for myself! It's a good thing to have to distract you when you need to be distracted!

I am sorry to hear about your husband, Melinda. But I'm glad that you found something what makes you feel better :) Looking at the engagement league you definitely aren't lonely ;)

Steem has been a much needed distraction for me, that's for sure! Thinking of you today....

Thank you so much! I had the surgery in the morning. It took only about 15 minutes and he told me that he wouldn't expect any complications. I had to take a painkiller to avoid strong pain after I came home. I went to bed and slept for 4 hours. When I woke up I was surprised that I was feeling like nothing happened. I made some soup and had lunch, took another pill and luckily don't feel any pain. I try to make sure that no food comes in there so that it wouldn't get any infection. And I hope it will stay like this. I am so happy right now! I didn't expect it would go so good :) BUT I don't want to be too positive as it's just half a day now..

I loved it

One question, people swim in that river? It looks enjoyable, I'd like to take a swim on that river!

An excellent initiative about trash cans.

Yes, sure. You can swim in rivers here - water is clean as Switzerland takes good care of its rivers and lakes. We don't have a sea nearby so we use what we have :) You can come and try it out :)

Thank you for stopping by!

Sounds great. With a river like that, I would spend it swimming every day. If I ever go to Switzerland, it will be on my list

I am in love with the water <3 and bins are really cool :D

A little bit too cold for a swim these days but in a few months it will be perfect :)

I like those bins too! :)

Thank you for stopping by :)

wow, such beautiful pictures, and I would love to take a walk around the place..
Love

Just come here :)

Great post! Your photoes are gourgeous, I can almost smell spring in the air. And the trash cans! they are just so cute! who wouldn't want to use them? Maybe the idea is to attract attention and make people use them...Great idea to decorate them :)

Thank you for stopping by! It's been very warm these days and it does indeed feel like spring. I hope it will stay like this as it makes me feel very good :)

I agree with you. I would use them just because they are so cute, lol :D

Oh, spring! Love the photographs. :)

Thank you!

we are in the middle of a blizzard right now

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that! We still have amazing weather here - it's sunny and so warm! Normally we have snow in February :)

Thank you for stopping by and I hope that the weather will get better over there :)

sounds lovely, I am basking in the warmth of your words. haha!
