Homesteading Math: Comparing Price Of Home-Canned Baked Beans Vs. Store Bought

Have you ever wondered if canning and preserving food is worth it? I know I have. When it comes to canning tomatoes and peppers I know there is definitely a cost-saving because I have grown the tomatoes and peppers in my gardens from seed.

But what about canning baked beans? I don't grow beans in the gardens, so I would have to purchase them.

Let's see...

Preparing the beans for the pressure canner.

After washing all the beans, removing any pebbles (I actually found one this time) and getting the ingredients mixed together, I scoop one half-cup of the beans' mixture into each pint size jar.

The cost for a 16-ounce can of store bought beans are on sale (on the left) for $2/each. And $2/each for a 28-ounce can (on the right).

So let's break down the cost next.

So I figured out the approximate cost of my ingredients, then figured,to the closest weight in ounces for the 16-ounce can of store bought baked beans.

As you can see definitely have quite a cost savings when making my own. And if I were to compare the 28-ounce cans, it's an even bigger savings. If I were to buy 5 cans of the 28-ounce it would be 140 total ounces for $10/USD (when on sale); whereas I could make 18 cans at home for the same cost.

I know the savings of $7 up to $14 for these may not seem like much, but when you start counting up and calculating ALL the savings for home canning versus store bought, it all adds up to quite a bit of savings throughout the year.

My wife and I got an instant pot about a year ago now and we started making our own refried beans. We actually enjoy them a lot more than the canned ones. The texture and flavor is so much better. We probably only save about $5 vs. when they are on sale, but it is still worth it to us.

Very cool you are doing the breakdown on cost. It really does make a difference. I've always done it for the gardens, and the animals. Gives you a good idea of where the money goes and what's cost effective and what is not.

Nice... it is great to have a good deal of savings.. plus it probably tastes much better as well! Just with the cost inputs, did you also count water and fertiliser?
