Ulog 116: Collecting Flowers Around The Homestead

in powerhousecreatives •  5 years ago

Today had been a day I have been dreading all week, ever since the National Weather Service issued an EXCESSIVE Heat Warning for where I live. Today is the day of my husband's work charity golf tournament.

Normally I volunteer, but this year... No way... No how!

With the heat warning, air quality warning and thunderstorm warning that's been issued for our area, he gave me an easy out and said I didn't have to go.

WHEW!

Lucky-ducky me!

Instead of doing my normal morning routine, as soon as he left I rushed outside to the flower gardens and started harvesting some flowers and leaves to set up in the dehydrator. And I'm so glad I did it when I had, because now I can her the rumble of thunder in the distance mocking me with a rainy, hot and humid day ahead of me.

So earlier I collected some nasturtium, chamomile, daylily, calendula, Echinacea, viola and pansy, rose and marsh mallow and Shasta Daisy among others.

I only got a handful of each, with the exception of the marsh mallow leaves. I want this to stock up my herbal pantry for brewing some teas. I don't like to take more than I need at the moment; as there will be plenty of time on a much cooler morning to collect my fair share to last me until next summer. I wasn't too fond of dashing in between rain drops today.

All of these beauties have been cleaned (with a spritz of white vinegar and water, patted dry and are now in the dehydrator. I will be using most of the flower petals for additions to my homemade soap, the marsh and rose mallow flowers and leaves and the chamomile for my tea concoctions and the viola and pansy flowers on top of my salad at lunch time (if you've never eaten these flowers in your salad, you're missing out on wonderful flavor!).

Heat is starting to be a concern for my stuff as well. For now everything seems to be enjoying it just trying water when it’s not hot outside.

Interesting I never thought of flowers going into a salad before. That must add a very nice splash of color!

It's been too hot here to run the dehydrators in the house for a few weeks now. But it's to cool down this week and I hope to get them going again...

Aweeeeeeeee!

I'd never heard of eating viola and pansy flowers, but I had heard that Nasturtium adds a slightly peppery-taste. Always wanted to try that, but can never remember to buy the seeds and plant them when they're available. 😕
