When reviewing my pictures, this shot fell into my hands and I would like to write a small article about it.
I took this picture in a hotel in Greece. The picture hung in the staircase to our room and fascinated me from the first moment. I then researched a little and found out the following about it. It is entitled "In Anticipation" and is by one of the greatest Greek painters and professors of painting Nikiforos Lytras (1832-1904), the size of the painting is 68 x 50 cm.
Nikiforos Lytras is considered one of the most important representatives of the painting of the realism of the so-called Munich School, and one of the first creators of the doctrine of fine arts in Greece.
When I saw this picture for the first time, I wondered what this young woman was looking for. Is she waiting for her husband, friend, who pursues his dangerous job as a fisherman on a small nutshell at sea? Is she waiting in vain? Is she waiting for her husband, friend, who works as a farmer in the scanty field and has to come home soon?
If you look at the picture for a longer time you immediately notice the flower. This young woman has given a little splendor to the spartan furnished room with a beautiful flower.
What I know from many conversations with my Greek friends is that life in the 19th century was very harsh in Greece. This is partly still up to the present time. Many Greeks have left their homes and today live in Northern Europe, America, Africa and Australia.
I would be interested to know how you find this picture and what you feel about it. Anyway, I was trapped by this picture from the start. What do you mean what she is waiting for?
I would be glad, if you write your opinion in a small comment.
Lovely painting that says a lot with a little of the outdoors nestled neatly in a corner making it home.
Thanks for sharing a little about the artist and picture quietly hanging on a wall waiting to be seen.

She longs to go outside and experience her freedom. She's been in this room for too long. The lily, placed there to remind her of her maidenhood purity has already bloomed in perfection, and soon the petals will fall.
She's already taken her shoes off in anticipation of walking on the pure white sand along the shore of the ocean. She knows the narrow pathway to the left will be strewn with rocks and pebbles and so she's wondering if she needs to take her shoes.
But more: She's wondering if she's brave enough to go the other way today ~ The way of the tempest. So she's looking to see if there are any signs in the 'heavens.' ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

A scene of waiting in anxiousness and hope. Or maybe just innocently smelling the oceans breeze, as I believe that a white flower signifies purity.
Blessings!

Could it be a depiction of the virgin Mary waiting for the Angel Gabriel. I noticed the flower and in some painting that I saw in museums here, the angel Gabriel holds a flower similar to that one planted in the pot.

It is a warm felt painting. It would be interesting to see what is on the other side of that wall. Waiting for her lover to arrive from the sea? It is what I am thinking as well.
