How much is TOO MUCH

Makeup is about balance. When the eye makes a statement, the lips should be quiet. - Francois Nars

Aaaah yes, "BALANCE" that one, VERY IMPORTANT little word which separates the delightful from the cringe worthy...

And whilst this post is not strictly related to make-up - I thought I would cross the bridge over those troubled waters first lol! By ALL means get into the "flow" of things, but find that straight line of cut-off at some point... please! Waves are good, but not when you have an ocean of them plastered on your face...

Whether referring to make-up, fashion or decor - there is such a thing as "too much" when it comes to the use of colour. Kids are the masters of the "too much" syndrome, lol - as they will usually develop a passion for a certain colour, and then absolutely everything worn must be that colour. Sadly however, this "monotone obsession"... seems to have stuck around through into adulthood for some people.

1.png

You have seen the above example of what "too much" is... now - below is just the right amount of one colour with the correct balance of another...

2.png

Let's do this one more time...

This is too much...

3.png

and this is just the right amount...

st-patrick-16.jpg

THIS PRINCIPLE TRANSLATES INTO DECOR TOO....

This is just complete overkill.... and to be quite honest, I think I would become utterly depressed if I had to spend any length of time in a room THAT blue.

and this is well balanced and very easy on the eye... far more uplifting in my opinion.

single colour feature walls are an amazingly effective way to bring a strong pop of colour into an area, without having to decorate everything else in the same colour...

7.png

because when you do that - you end up with this...

8.png

I think I officially have a headache now...lol

To my mind - if you want a focal colour in a specific room, it is better to do the foundation of the room in a neutral and then add accents of colour with ornaments, pillows, feature walls etc. That way - if you are anything like me and bore easily... you can quite quickly and inexpensively give the room a colour revamp when your mood changes... haha

So... now that we are on the same page...

Happy Decorating & Dressing peeps :)

oh and PS. These are my opinions... you don't HAVE to agree ;)

I think we have the same view on this! I found those "too much" and the others quite adorable and lifting. Indeed, too much is not too cool and balance is always needed in everything. Life is about balance.

You have good eyes for colour and blend.

Life is about balance.

Precisely!

And thank you :) I suppose, 17 years as a graphic designer will do that lol

WOW!!! That is a long time and impressive. I duff my hats off for you, hahaha.

testament to how old I am LOL

Hahaha. Good news, you don't even look it. Talking about beauty and brains...you got them both.

ha! Compliment of the year... I will shut up and accept it graciously :)

Hahahaha. It is true. Keep smiling, keep shining.

backatya! :)

I've never been a fan of makeup. my wife almost never wears it.

I dont wear much myself - but am not quite at the ZERO point lol ;)

I love this :D So nicely put together and VERY WELL ILLUSTRATED <3 I really like your approach with a more toned-down balance in colour composition, but some people do go ALL OUT with one colour XD

I am more like you, in general, but some of my friends can actually pull off a more striking look with their outfits and room decors :) I guess as long as people know what kind of aesthetics they are going for, different strokes of colour balance can work :D

Still, love this post very much ! It sure does illustrate my own preference of the lines of 'where is it TOO MUCH' :D

hehe thanks @veryspider and yes agreed on all counts!

Too much say it all! All the agglomeration of colors, objects, gets tired. That's why we have to choose simple and little. To me this choice came with age. Much is ... too much!

well said @bluemoon - and agreed, I do think a large part of it comes with maturity.

Thank you!

pleasure :)

Love the new footer ! Oh and I am color coordinated so to me never to much if you love it yourself

haha thanks hon, it just felt like it was time for a change.....

never to much of you love yourself
LOVE IT!

I would not be able to stay in the room in one color for a long time)) This is definitely too much))

hehehe yeah I know... My mood coordinator would short circuit LOL!!!

For makeup, I think it's too much when without it, a lady looks like a completely different person. :) The all yellow room would give me nightmares I think, and I've never had a nightmare in my life!

hahaha yeah... those kinds of ladies scare people :P

As a guy I don’t care if she has some blemish somewhere or a line or whatever. If someone is just having fun and enjoys wearing makeup and putting it on that’s great. People should however not feel like they need to hide themselves by adding a layer of it caking it on so thick they are covered in a dust cloud. Unless that is the look they are going for. One thing makeup can’t be put on is personality and intelligence.

Which those rooms wow they got some personality to them that is for sure. I’ll admit I do enjoy that all blue one. I think the wood floor is just enough balance in my eyes.

hehe as they say, different strokes for different folks :)

I don't wear make up so I'm either using just enough or too little of the stuff.
However some of the boys and men in Korea wear a lot of make up. There are cosmetics shops and sections for men. It's not drag queen, theatre, or military/hunting make either. Those into pop music really like the stuff. However a lot of them have plastoc surgery and many dermal treatments so their skin is nearly flawless already.
I tried having a few spots removed once cause they got in the way of shaving. But these skin people wanted to give me the full treatment. I think they wamted my money and appreciated that I am ot their stereotypical customer.

That whole pop thing seems to be quite the fad these days.

I love how you defined what "too much" is and I couldn't agree more. 😅

lol thanks - perhaps it is the Gemini in me, or the graphic designer, but hell.... some people really need to be educated HAHA :D

Oh! I'm a Gemini too! Probably the Gemini. LOL

Sometimes less and simple brings out the real beauty. Do you think when I master room decor, I could also do makeup? Lol

HAHAHAHAHA!!! I think perhaps you should stick to one set of expertise :P

Hard to understand why a full grown adult would like to have so much pink in just one room - that is way over the top haha :)

tell me about it lol

You are an all around woman my lady. Too much it's never too much in my dictionary lol.

hahahaha ;)

Balance is everything, you are so right. I like neutral colours too, when i made my art studio i chose grey for the walls even though people advised me not to,lol. But the plan was to use the walls as a canvas, a neutral background for the colourful artworks and objects. It worked really well:)

I like that you knew EXACTLY what you were going to do with those walls! People are quick to judge when they lack the same vision ;)

I am a man with a plan and a little imagination, lol

ha! good thing that :)

Well, the plan does not always work, but is good to have one😊
