Psalm 66 is a song of praise and gratitude to God, spirituality does not consist only in asking but also in giving thanks to the Lord for the gifts received from above.
And this prayer begins in a very interesting way:
"Come and hear, all you who fear God;
let me tell you what he has done for me" Psalm 66:16.
The Psalmist begins by saying that he wants to share his song with all who fear God. And this is fundamental, because the fear of God is the beginning of our relationship with God. In other words, the Bible explains that we have a docile or hard heart toward the divine, we are like David who always sought the face of God, or we are like Ahab who mocked the prophet Micaiah. The fear of God is constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, and stability.
We must turn wisely to God, the Psalmist tells us, we must be like Abel, and not like Cain, who was the murderer of his brother. If we want to have a dialogue with God from our egoism, God cannot listen to us, because egoism is a human imperfection. When we relate to God it is important to keep in mind Psalm 1, the Psalm of the two ways: "For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction" Psalm 1:6.
The Psalmist then continues with his hymn:
"I cried out to him with my mouth;
his praise was on my tongue.
If I had cherished sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened" Psalm 66:17-18.
God is wise and all the ways of the Lord are righteousness (golden rule), mercy (compassion, kindness), and perseverance, so the Psalmist tells us, the Lord is faithful and like a good father he does not forget his beloved children, whoever asks well receives gifts and blessings, the Psalmist ends:
"But God has surely listened
and has heard my prayer.
Praise be to God,
who has not rejected my prayer
or withheld his love from me!" Psalm 66:19-20.
Psalm 66 is a reminder that we should always be people who are grateful for all that is good.
