The prayer of Jabez: Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain

The first book of Chronicles begins with a long genealogical list that begins with Adam and arrives until after the Babylonian exile, at which time the book was probably written. And in this list appears an extremely interesting character named Jabez. The sacred scriptures do not tell us much about Jabez, but the first book of Chronicles tells us that he invoked the Lord asking for his help.
This was the prayer of Jabez to the Lord: "Jabez cried out to the God of Israel, ´Oh, that you would bless me and enlarge my territory! Let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm so that I will be free from pain.´ And God granted his request" 1 Chronicles 4:10.
Jabez with this prayer granted by the Lord, as recounted in the Bible, teaches us the importance of putting ourselves confidently in the hands of God. Jabez feared God, and like king Solomon who asked for wisdom, he asked for the blessing of the Lord to be free from harm and evil, the minimization of suffering, which is what Jabez sought, in spirituality is a key point.
The prayer also alludes to the word territory or land, and this refers to God's promise made to Abraham, with the land comes the secure life, and the prosperity and happiness that come from working on that land. A man or a people without territory has an insecure future.
Jabez was a blessed man who knew the ways of the Lord. The spiritual gift of fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion) is in the Bible the basis of our relationship with God and the path to wisdom: "Praise the LORD. Blessed are those who fear the LORD, who find great delight in his command" Psalm 112:1.
In the Bible knowing how to ask God with wisdom and devotion is necessary to be blessed and this is what Jabez did, if we ask God selfishly we cannot expect any beatitude from the Lord. Jabez is the faithful reminder of a biblical teaching: "Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans" Proverbs 16:3.
