The book of Tobit tells us the story of a man and his family, a household that belonged to the tribe of Naphtali and who were deported to Nineveh.
Tobit was not a prophet nor was he a person who gave us some kind of revelation from God, nor did this person perform extraordinary acts like Samson; but the book puts Tobit as an example of righteousness, mercy, and fear of God. In a style similar to that of Job, Tobit was put to the test, and after the examination was finished, he was blessed by the Lord. In the life of Tobit, a teaching of the Psalm of the two paths, the Psalm 1, is fulfilled: "For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction" Psalm 1:6.
The book of Tobit is a story with a deep ethical sense, in a society dominated by sin, hatred, and oppression like the community of the pagans, he sets the example to follow for all those who believe in the Lord, and a important instruction was given, when men live faithful to the law and live the gifts that God freely gives, the Lord's reward may take time but it does come. Tobit was an extremely patient person, even keeping the calm when his wife harshly criticized him for being a godly man: "So she retorted: ´Where are your charitable deeds now? Where are your righteous acts? Look! All that has happened to you is well known!´" Tobit 2:14.
The life of Tobit is summed up in a precept: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man", Ecclesiastes 12:13.
And Tobit also taught us something very important because in the face of affliction he did not question God, but made a prayer, so that the Lord would listen to him:
"You are righteous, Lord,
and all your deeds are just.
All your ways are mercy and fidelity;
you are judge of the world.
And now, Lord, be mindful of me
and look with favor upon me.
Do not punish me for my sins,
or for my inadvertent offenses,
or for those of my ancestors." Tobit 3:2-3.
The Lord listened to Tobit and sent the angel Raphael to help him and his family, and thus Tobit was cured, and his son, Tobiah, was blessed with a good wife, a story with a happy ending. Happiness belongs to those who fear the Lord.
