Preaching the kingdom: I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.

John the Baptist is presented to us in the Gospel of Saint Matthew preaching conversion to the Kingdom of Heaven:
"´Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.´ This is he who was spoken of through the prophet Isaiah:
´A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
´Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.´´", Matthew 3:2-3
John Baptizes in the Jordan for the conversion of sinners and the announcement of the arrival of someone who is more important than him. Conversion is the passage from a life full of sins to a life of righteousness (The golden rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”, Matthew 7:12), conversion is a spiritual Passover to which we are all called.
John preaches that God is no respecter of persons and that there is no distinction between Jews and pagans, entering the Kingdom of God implies a change of heart:
"Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not think you can say to yourselves, ´We have Abraham as our father.´ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.", Matthew 3:8-9.

Besides preaching about conversion, John introduces us to Jesus:
"I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.", Matthew 3:11.
Jesus brings us another baptism not for repentance, but for the likeness of God (Gnosis): "Everyone will be salted with fire" Mark 9:49. Fire like water represents purification, but fire is also the energy of God, that energy that transforms the soul and gives us the love of God, the love projected towards the whole creation of God: "God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit", Romans 5:5.
The second baptism represents access to the mysteries of wisdom and the holy spirit: "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God", Matthew 5:8.
