Unconscious cruelty.

Some people have a preference for waking up feeling so emotionally exhausted that they don't know how they'll manage to get through the day.

Some people have a preference for the absolute horror of feeling completely numb, to the point where you'll hurt yourself in desperation just to feel something, anything.

Some people have a preference for standing on the borderline between life and death, desperately fearing death, but fearing continued life just as badly.

Some people have a preference for hearing voices they can't distinguish from reality that tell them to hurt themselves or others.

Some people have a preference for being irrationally worried that others are targeting them, so that they live their lives in a perpetual state of crippling anxiety.

Some people curiously develop a strong preference for depression after going through menopause.

And other people who are fortunate never to have had these "preferences," wholly incapable of understanding how exceptionally fortunate they are, will nod their head and say, "yes, this must be what these people actually want."

There's a truly unconscious cruelty in these people, however nice they might be in general.
