Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM) tipped to rise post Dobbs.

Of course maternal mortality is especially concerning regarding pregnancy, but pregnancy also has maternal morbidity associated with it.

1.2% of maternal hospitalizations are associated with Severe Maternal Morbidity (SMM- significant short-term and long-term adverse consequences to health). Rates of SSM are on the order of 50x higher than maternal mortality. With a similar higher rate of morbidity among Black women (2.1% of maternal hospitalizations) compared to other ethnic groups (1.0% for White women and 1.0% for Hispanic women).

A post-Dobbs US will see more maternal morbidity and mortality as women are forced to give birth and carry out unsafe abortions. This burden disproportionately falling on Black women in particular who already have high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality as they lose abortion rights.
