Lukaku is heading to United for a fee understood to be worth £75million, rising to £90m
Manchester United believe they have won the race to sign Romelu Lukaku after agreeing a fee with Everton for the striker.
Chelsea matched United’s £75million offer for Lukaku and United have announced they have agreed the terms of his transfer with Everton with £15m in add-ons.
Lukaku, 24, will now have a medical in Los Angeles where he has been on holiday with his pal and United star Paul Pogba.
He is expected to meet up with his new United team-mates over the weekend and Jose Mourinho and his squad fly out to Los Angeles on Sunday for the start of their US pre-season tour.
Crucially the deal also includes United waiving a fee for Wayne Rooney to pave his way to return to Goodison Park after 13 years at Old Trafford on a free transfer.
Rooney’s agent Paul Stretford has been negotiating his move back to Everton with Blues chairman Bill Kenwright and an imminent announcement is expected to say they too have reached agreement.
Rooney is understood to be prepared to take a significant cut on his £250,000-a-week basic salary at United to make the deal happen.
He is expected to meet up with his new United team-mates soon and Jose Mourinho and his squad fly out to Los Angeles tomorrow for the start of their US pre-season tour.
United sources claimed on Thursday morning that they had agreed a £75million fee with Everton, but had to backtrack when Everton denied their claims.
This gave Chelsea hope they might be able to snatch Lukaku with an eleventh-hour bid and the Belgium hitman is Antonio Conte’s No 1 transfer target.
However United's agreement with Everton appears to end those hopes and the Blues would prefer to sell to their North West neighbours because a deal for Rooney is integral to Lukaku’s transfer.
Everton have also not forgotten the bad blood between the clubs generated two summers ago by Chelsea’s pursuit of John Stones.
