Salah fended off competition from Manchester City's trio of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Leroy Sane to clinch the award. Tottenham's Harry Kane and Manchester United's David De Gea made up the six-man shortlist.

The Egyptian becomes the first Liverpool player to claim the award after Luis Suarez in 2014. He has scored 41 goals in 46 appearances for the Reds this season and would also be looking to help them to their first Champions League final since 2007 when he travels with the Reds face his former club, AS Roma in the Semifinal of the Champions League. He is also the first Egyptian to ever win the award.
