A Reality Check - if you think you’re going to go straight from the city to live off the land, you’re in for a horrible – and potentially fatal – surprise.
A prepper homestead is something that must be built over a period of time – it’s absolutely not a plug-and-play solution, regardless of the number of survival seed packets you have carefully stashed away.
Homesteading for survival is not a good plan if you have never done it before. No matter how hardworking you are, homesteading takes time. Time for learning, time for mistakes, and time for your plans to come to fruition.
The author tries to warn you of the dangers and give you good advice on how to succeed. If you fear the world is changing for the worse and you want to acquire your corner of the universe, then I strongly urge you to learn from now - and do not wait for the 'wonderful and trusty' MSM to provide you with adequate warning of dangers coming your way.
As an aside, I suggest you make a list of sites to keep informed by, or else, use the aggregate news site: https://www.whatfinger.com
Having lived on a homestead when I was younger, and just off the top of my head, look for a few basics:
- Land with a secure water supply (do not depend on good rainfalls, as this could change)
- Check the soil. If you are going to buy a number of trees and other plants, try and get the seller to help you, let him inspect the land and give you his opinion. It is worth taking him out for a few beers...
- The house may look good - be certain the foundations are sound, check for damp and if there are problems but you still want the property, then consider how you will feel if the problems appear again after the SHTF
- Forget about feelings and wanting a comfort zone. Use practical common sense - and if you are not strong in that department, ask for advice. If you can afford it, even employ an experienced person for a year or two so as to learn from him or her.
- An idea I toyed around with was the advantages-disadvantages of partnering with another family. It has advantages, but people change, especially when their survival is at stake, so if you go ahead, make certain you each have your own home, water supply and an agreement of how you will split the land if it comes to that.
Not thinking of the future, not using common sense, these are some of the factors which placed us in this situation - do not continue living the same lie, this must be treated as your last desperate chance to ensure the survival of your loved ones.

I like this post a lot, very reasonable.. even a home garden can be a difficult challenge in today's fast past world, now imagine trying to learn everything in a high stress environment when you're starving! Too many people have dangerous expectations in life.. like people who try to stand their ground in businesses and just wind up dead.

The one flaw I see with many preppers is their belief that if/when the shtf, that there will not be government thugs that are making it that scenario, coming farm to farm to eject or worse the people living there while confiscating whatever they have stored away. I also believe that there will be bands of people searching for such places to loot and take over.

I've seen one homestead, in South Africa, built with think stone walls, with slits for the rifles, a well inside and food for about 30 or so, for nearly a year. I was invited to join if anything happened (at time white gov stepped down.
The problem you mention is immense, but it might work out in the sense that bands will extract a 'tax' in foods etc for protecting a number of such homesteads...

I am not familiar with Africa, but hopeful that would help them defend. Here in the U.S. they have to many weapons that would lay waste to stone walls.
It is an immense problem, one I hope never comes and is just the worries of an aging man who sees to much corruption and allows his mind to worry to much.

For what its worth, if it gets to that point I also believe many in the government will find out just how valued they are by the same crews I am talking about. Tools usually don't get they are tools until their value is gone. It is one of the few reasons to smile if such a thing happens, knowing that those who helped facilitate it will usually meet fates that are among the most horrible. Bolsheviks anyone?

The way I see it, a sustainable homestead will depend on its ability to generate value for the surrounding community. Call me naive, but if the self-proclaimed authorities ever show up there better be huge alliances with the locals already, all sworn to protect the ark of knowledge and abundance.
I have long moved off the idea to live an isolated life in abundance. It is meant to be shared and will echo in genuine loyalty by those who see and feel its direct merits to their own life.

As long as the government is not the threat, I agree.

More people need to be prepared for things. I’m not as prepared as homesteading but I think I’m better off than many people I know.

For those who cannot homestead (my short list suggestion:
We should secure vacuum packed dry foods to keep us alive for at least 3 to 6 months. It is not difficult nor is it expensive - you can buy them over a few months. Rice, beans, lentils, split peas, dried tomato, flour or oats, barley (not pearled) and why not add a few sticks of dried salted meat? Use from the stock, replacing it, so that it remains fresh. Make certain you have lots of salt as it could become very precious. Some powder milk and tea or coffee and honey will break the monotony.

It is alot harder to get things going on a homestead to be able to support your life then most would ever think.

I agree - which is why I see having neighbours you can trade with and look to for common defence , a slight advantage. Better than nothing. Also, some people are better with plants and some with animals or birds.

I have no money and bugger all assets but I'm as comfortable as anything.
I might be an old git now, but I spent my youth growing up on farm fishing, hunting (air rifle). trapping rabbits. blah, blah.
I know i can do it all again, if I have to.
Where I live now has an abundance of wildlife (not the same as where I grew up).
If/when the shit hits the fan, the only thing that bothers me is other people being dicks, not food, and there ain't much I can do about other people, so no point worrying about it.
It's all cool.
I think there are going to be millions of people, especially in the western cities - that will be saying ' So this is why we had all those zombie movies over this last few years...'
It has the potential of being brutal..

You haven't said anything I disagree with.
I saw, some time ago, some videos and articles of how to grow food without it being recognisable - I think it was called the 'secret garden'. The idea being that while your vegetable garden is recognised and stolen, you will have close to it a garden of what looks like wild plants, but that provides you and family with all you need.
If I find the info, I'll make another post....
