The Original rocket stoves were called Dakota hole fires. They make almost no smoke, so they can be used when you don't want to be noticed. They also use very little wood, so no ax or saw required.
I like to put several rocks around the perimeter of the hole, which have the added use of supporting a pot of food over the hole while still providing ventilation
I taught one of the homeless how to do this fire. The city was after them, and didn't want open fires under the bridges. He made one of these, so they could cook food, and he puts flat rocks over the openings to hide them. They have mowed over them, and never found them. He plans to line the holes with clay soon!
