What To Get First As A New Prepper

A lot of new preppers get excited and want to go out and buy all the cool things like guns, knives and throwing axes, but there are a lot of scenarios where those won’t even come into play for the most part. The main goal is survival. Cover the basics first.

What you should get first are the items to make sure you have the ability to shelter in place for about a week.  Once you have those items, then start with the most important items you are going to need in any situation. Shelter, water and food are most important. 

If power goes out in the winter are you able to heat your home? 

If your water shuts off, what will you do for water? 

These are the types of questions you need to answer first.   That being said, if you are very worried for a major disaster or war, then start getting the items that you will need the most if something big happens. 

If you are really worried about nuclear war, then get a lot of plastic and duct tape to seal up your house in case of an attack. Have a sanitation station and way to shower at the entrance. Most people don't die in a nuclear blast, they die from the fallout.  But think about it... is a nuke more pressing than a big winter storm? An earthquake maybe?

Start by getting the items that are most important to you and your family. Before you buy all kinds of stuff to defend yourself, make sure you have the items you need to keep you alive in a bad situation.   

Having defensive items are important, but those are most likely needed in a very bad SHTF scenario. If that is the case, you will need water and food just to survive or you might be one of the people out attacking people for supplies.   

When buying stuff for long-term storage or really any kind of prepper gear, know where to save and where to spend. You can buy generic medicine, food and second-hand camping equipment, but you want to make sure you don’t cut corners on some items.    

If you are buying a gun to help save your life, don’t waste your money on a cheap gun, go out and get a good one. If you are going to be in the dark, don’t buy the dollar flashlights, spend some money and get tough ones.    

Being a prepper can get expensive real quick when you start buying stuff, so make sure that what you are buying is what you need and of good quality when required.
