At the beginning of this, I thought he was going to beat Trump. For about 15 minutes he led Trump in the polls. And he had a great argument for conservatives. He argued that he could give them all that Trump advocated but without the crazy. If I was a doctrinarian conservative that would be very attractive to me. I would be on board, I mean no one can say that DeSantis is not a fighter and, unlike Trump, he is a smart fighter. He actually wins policy victories.
But DeSantis and I made a mistake in the calculation and evaluation of his strategy. Trump's "crazy" is not a bug but a feature of his political career. Just too many people voted for him to do the crazy. To tear apart our system, then you need crazy, and Trump supplies that. A good chunk of Trump voters do not want a competent politician who will pass the legislation they want. They want the system to burn.
At this point, Hayley is the only thing standing in the way of Trump's nomination and as much as I like for her to win, the odds are heavily stacked against her. Too early to know what will happen later this year, but if the election was held today Trump would likely beat Biden. Trump's crazy has a good chance to be in the White House for the next four years. Those who think that is a good thing may regret that desire as our country becomes more polarized and vicious.
