You Are Worth As Much As You Believe You Do

in price •  7 years ago  (edited)

I have been a freelancer for over 10 years now. Every now and then I stumble upon a customer that questions my pricing. Instead of trying to explain based on market dynamics, I decided to always share a popular story about Picasso. It almost always seems to end the argument. The story has different variations, as one would expect. The one I know, goes like this:

Picasso was sitting in a coffee shop in Paris, doodling away a pigeon on a napkin. A woman was watching him curiously. After a few minutes he stands up and crumbles the napkin. When he was about to throw it away, the woman rushes and stops him. "Wait, I'll pay you for it. How much do you want?" she says. Picasso responds: "Ok. $20.000". The woman went on complaining about the outrageous price Picasso was asking. "But it only took you 2 minutes!", she continued. Picasso took a good look at her and responded "No, it took me 40 years".

Never let anyone set a price for your abilities. Price is an entirely subjective concept. If you doubt this then check what the Wall Street is doing every day. Heck, check how most cryptocurrencies are valued. They are based on pretty much empty promises. Their value is determined by them, for them and the public is just expected to fulfill their expectation.

The most valuable thing you have is experience — experience that has been crafted with time. There is nothing more valuable than time.

When someone starts comparing your worth based on a given average then they are devaluing you off the bat. There is no such thing as "average" price because the concept of "average service" is also illusive. Your service is unique and can be valued by any means you wish. The first mistake people often make is to start comparing themselves to others. Sure, it can make sense when you are selling potatoes or standardized equipment, but your person is completely different thing.

I often walk out of deals when I see people trying to lure me into their marketing tactic. Some of them call later to apologize, trying to come up with a better offer. Most of them though will try and find the next desperate person in line so they can squeeze as much as they can. If you have found yourself in situations where you constantly have to do more while being paid less then get out as fast as you can. It will only get worse.

We have been conditioned by our system to believe and follow certain guidelines. Rules that have sculpted most of us into puppets for someone else's pleasure. We are taught specific subjects and learn focused skills so we can fulfill all other dreams instead of ours.

We chase careers based on salaries or how much everybody else is valued. Think about it a bit. Every month you are valued the exact same amount. That is your "salary". It is as if you are a slave in a plantation and you are allowed 2 loafs of bread with 3 olives. Every. Single. Day.

The idea of the salary is nothing more than the evolution of slavery. Historians won't see much of a difference considering that today most people work without making enough for rent and food.

Next time you find yourself in a situation that questions how much you are worth, stand your ground. No matter how desperate you are, just be willing to sacrifice at least one customer or employer to try this little experiment. Something new will wake up inside of you. Even if you end up losing the deal you will feel fantastic.

Yes, that is true. You need to believe in yourself.

Great post. I am working on a post that dovetails right into this comment you made:

"The idea of the salary is nothing more than the evolution of slavery. "

The "psuedo-free" market of today is the new, benign slavery. The sad fact seems to be that a large amount of humanity generally does not want to contribute more than the bare minimum required for them to survive at what they consider an acceptable Quality of Life. Almost every society throughout history, prior to modern times, solved this issue with (often arbitrary) slavery.

That was only necessary until the widespread creation and acceptance of completely un-backed fiat currencies in the 1900s. Now, the plantations masters click a button, and they create 1000-years-worth of your salary in one second. This is then doled out to get 1000 of us to make us subservient for another year.

To channel a bit of Peter Gibbons from Office Space: "That'll only make someone work just hard enough not to get fired." (or 20 lashes)

This is why every modern corporation employs organizational psychology to shame and embarrass you into a "work ethic" that none of the executives will ever have. There is literally a master's degree track in psychology designed to focus solely on this task

You will be hard-pressured into working unpaid over time nights and weekends, staying through lunch, skipping or shortening breaks, etc. You will be soft-pressured into being ashamed to ask for your legitimate breaks and sick days. Your health and life quality will suffer as you work sick. You may lose personal, family, or romantic relationships as you are literally turned into a more-wretched-than-I-remember person. You will start to have a form of corporate-Stockholm-syndrome, where you will actually compare how many hours you worked with your friends (with more being better) as if you are competing in some kind of Corporate-Slave-Olympics.

And yes, it will all be so this guy's stock "can go up a quarter of a point."

I intend to cover what I call "ethical corporate underachievement" in a future life-strategy post for coping with these issues without appearing not to be a team player.

Excellent analysis. Looking forward to your article.

Your vote of confidence encouraged me to get this article out quicker =) :

Excellent points throughout your post. You are right value comes from within; not from someone else's opinion. :)

Everyday I am reminded that I am worthless unless I do something that is worthwhile. That is why I try my best to do something great everyday.

lol @ your nickname :) keep it up my friend. Is all a fucking joke

Yup it is sure is. When you die you into the cold hard ground. There is no after life, there is no "touching the face of god". Once you die you die. That is it.

The first step to leading a succesful life is believing in yourself. Beautiful article.

Nice post, I'm a musician and we can relate to this as much as any other group. Over the last year I've had some people ask me how much I would charge to do some work especially for their companies. Usually when I give them a quote they say they'll think about it and then I never hear from them again, but it's simply not worth doing it for less. What area do you freelance in?

I make companies stand out. Design, marketing, web and everything else in between.

Holy shit....... I've always felt this way but could never put it into words so brilliantly as you! This is one of my favorite posts I've had the pleasure of running across here on steemit! Such very TRUE words! I'd follow you again if it were possible. I've yet to re-steem but this will be my first friend. Thank you so much! Much appreciated and enjoyed!

Glad you enjoyed it my friend. All best.

The idea of the salary is nothing more than the evolution of slavery.

oh i remember this one :)

no Morty.. burp they work for each other

they work * each other

;D

Great read, and great inspiration! Im an artist, and I have side jobs just to keep afloat. People try to widdle me down all the time cuz they want a better deal but dont realize I worked hard on this sketch, or mural or painting or whatever it is for hours even days or weeks.
steem on my friend!

steem on!

Wonderful post. Your timing on this was perfect. I am, literally, right now working on my new pricing sheet for my digital graphics work. I have been really undervaluing my work so that I can bring in customers. No longer! If I can work for one person and make the same a working for three people, why wouldn't I?

Precisely. This is the kind of greater picture most people cannot see.

It's liberating once you get there. Kind of like giving yourself permission to be happy and successful.

indeed

Great article! This really hit home for me, as I've been guilt of chasing salary and not really focusing on what I think my worth is. I feel a lot of this has resulted from working for someone else. Though, now I'm working to be free and work for myself... And it's very true (in regards to a comment above) that when people compare how many hours they work, like it's some type of measure of accomplishment, I usually undermine it by stating that I aim to work no overtime. That usually ends the pissing contest right there, but sometimes someone will retort with some weak explanation as to why they have to work 50-60 hours/week - even though working that much actually has the opposite effect, it cheapens their value.

Yeap, unless you roll by yourself, you are going to stumble upon these incidents more and more.

Indeed, people reduce their value by working so much. Notice how many jobs today even expect you to work for free in order to gain experience...

To the extreme: "We won't be able to pay you, but it will be good for your exposure" is what photographers and web designers sometimes are told here in The Netherlands.

You can expose your finger to them. It might actually be good for you.

I know it feels good from experience 8-). Very liberating.

Well, I haven't seen all the comments, I guess all loves your post.
For me, its worth resteeming.
Love it as well!

thank you. much appreciated.

Oh wow! I really needed to read this! All the time I get told I undersell what I make by family / friends, but it's because I don't think other people would value my skills like that. Thank you so much! It was a good read

Glad to have changed your mind towards a more lucrative future

This is honestly a great article for everyone who is a freelancer and business owner as myself. Actually for everyone! Great morning read, thank you!

Glad you enjoyed it

Really nice posts, I love it!

thank you

This is a wonderful and encouraging read. :) Very true.

glad you enjoyed it

:)

Great post. In my opinion the whole profession is loosing on its value because of some individuals that dont value themselves enough and work for low prices.

You can say that again.

Nice post i like it so much

glad you enjoyed it

Thank you :)

you are welcome

Agreed, that is one of the early things many freelancers and entrepreneurs (including myself) struggle with. Having the confidence and being comfortable asking quoting good compensation.

Especially when it comes to raising prices on existing long time clients

Confidence makes all the difference really

I am a painter.. Good reminder..!!

On the flip side :
when I first started painting I had an opportunity to sell or trade a couple of my art pieces for less than I wanted to.. I was stubborn on the value I gave it and regretted it later on seeing my art sitting in storage.. Sometimes it is good to give, let go or trade.. Not everyone can afford what we want for our service and it is good to be kind..

I gave away all my paintings the first couple of years.

I gave alot too

nice post. I think about values.

I think we are all

This is excellent. There is so much power in the walk away. If the customer is arguing about price that means the sale is still on or else they would have walked away already. Stand ground, prove worth and they will buy.

exactly

Awesome post! Deserves a bravo and claps:

Oh, and an avocado too.

avocados are always good

Knowing the value of everything is key, not only the price! Love this!

glad you do!

I am an artist and something I leant to say from another artist when needing to deal with someone commenting on a price they think is to much is "Well...its not priced for everyone." Im never rude AT ALL!!! I just know how much I want for my work and time and creations!!! Thanks for the post- a nice reenforcement before I head to the markets to sell my creations this weekend!

yeap. no shame in saying that. i say it too.

beautiful write up

thank you

Totally agree, I agree if you spend your whole life honing your skills by spending tons of time and money and you can quickly carry out your work. Then the customer does not come to mind why you managed so quickly and he wants to pay less. I have a bar in the money below which I never go down and it helps me.

yeap. never sell yourself short.

I hadn't heard that Picasso quote, but as a fellow freelancer it is encouraging. I think that also your value is exponential.. in that you work for several years at a relatively low salary, but as soon as you have the experience to specialise you can start charging much more for your time.

i think you can google it pretty easy. there are variations to the story. indeed, our value increases with time.

when there is a mosquito land on your scrotum, you'll find that violence is not a only way to solve problem.

true but what is the context for this quote?

Great post! I love your writing style. We can still learn a lot from mr. Picasso

of course we can. History is the best teacher.

I like the part where you talked about salary. In our culture people tend to judge others from how much they make. I guess other cultures are like that. On a similar note, I've read a post in facebook how people's worth are not determined by the number of likes or followers they have. Ironically though, in this platform we call Steem, though we would want to transcend putting a price tag on someone or someone's work, it's easy to fall in that trap, cycle or mistake...

I guess everything has its price. I don't see it as bad or good. it just is.

It became very helpful! Thank you!ありがとう!

glad you liked it yoshiko

What a excellent post, you made a point that most people do not realise they miss it completely maybe it comes with age but I loved your post ty

Great post. I am a freelancer too. I will never forget your advice.
