The teacher of Wisdom Ben Sira, when reflecting in his book on the most prominent people in the history of the people of Israel, did not forget to mention the priest Phinehas.
Pinehas, according to the Book of Numbers, was the grandson of the priest Aaron and the son of Eleazar, this priest, relates this book, had to face the heresy of Baal of Peor, a heresy similar to that of the Golden Calf that occurred near Mount Horeb.
And the story begins this way, after Balaam's oracles, the Israelites arrived at a town called Shittim. Then it was that many Israelites prostituted themselves with women from the country of Moab and thus worshiped the God of that land, and the Bible tells us what happened: "The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the LORD's anger burned against them" Numbers 25:2-3.
Thus the prophet Moses ordered the judges of Israel to execute all the Israelites who had submitted and worshiped the Baal of Peor. Phinehas relates the book of Numbers, he was the first to set the example, and for this action, Phinehas and his descendants were blessed by God with a permanent priesthood. The actions of the priest were a reminder in the Bible that the God of Israel is a jealous God: "You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God" Exodus 20:5.
This is how the master of wisdom Ben Sira described the zeal and actions of this notable priest called Phinehas:
"PHINEHAS too, the son of Eleazar,
was the courageous third of his line
When, zealous for the God of all,
he met the crisis of his people
And, at the prompting of his noble heart,
atoned for the children of Israel.
Therefore, on him also God conferred the right,
in a covenant of friendship, to provide for the sanctuary,
so that he and his descendants
should possess the high priesthood forever" Ben Sira 45:23-24.
