The U.S. Prison Industrial Complex Series

Part One: Just the Tip of the Iceberg

Before we venture - together - down into this shit pile

(and please if you're finding yourself offended by my language PLEASE remind yourself swear words should be the LEAST of your concerns - you are going to HAD BETTER be seriously offended by what is going on right under our noses) -

we all need to understand how the Prison system works, who the major players are, how they are funded and how much of our American population is directly affected on the whole.

Since the tip of this iceberg is still fucking enormous I've realized I'll have to chip away at the basic set up for fear of creating a intro post so long no one will read it! This post will be dedicated to the American population which is or has been directly affected by the prison system and the related costs so everyone can see the magnitude of what we are about to explore.

Let's Look at the Big Picture

source

It's been challenging to get accurate information because there are just so many sectors of the American Prison System - and the Judicial System has more fucking snake heads than Medusa! The way facts are "hidden" and statistics are diluted is by segregating populations, excluding age brackets, splitting up the beast into separate departments: public and private then state and federal, detention centers, jails, prisons, mental facilities, etc.

Please keep this in mind as you look over the stats below. Some of these are segregated populations with certain departments excluded.

Many nonprofit organizations work behind the scenes trying to compile these groups into one entire population so we can ALL see the big picture. I found https://www.prisonpolicy.org which does an amazing job of tallying up all the affected human beings. (Yes, hate it though you may, you MUST accept these numbers represent REAL INDIVIDUALS - people with families, humans birthed here just like you.)

I am sourcing all these images and the included stats - I DID not create these graphs but they are amazing and I've gratefully borrowed the information from PrisonPolicy.org

The American criminal justice system holds more than 2.3 million people in 1,719 state prisons, 102 federal prisons, 901 juvenile correctional facilities, 3,163 local jails, and 76 Indian Country jails as well as in military prisons, immigration detention facilities, civil commitment centers, and prisons in the U.S. territories.

Every year, 641,000 people walk out of prison gates, but people go to jail over 11 million times each year. "[...the enormous churn in and out of our correctional facilities and the far larger universe of people whose lives are affected by the criminal justice system.]

The Government Released Statistics

These stats were taken directly from The Bureau of Justice press release from Feb 22, 2018. You can follow this link to their site to verify and review these stats plus a whole mess more.

And remember these are filtered statistics. Look back at the word choices again: "county and city jails", then regular "jails" in a different stat. What are they talking about? We can see from the graphs above there are many different types of facilities and never ONCE do they define whether they have included or excluded either state or federal populations or whether this is the public or private prison sector polled.

The jail incarceration rate fell from 237 inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents at midyear 2012 to 229 inmates per 100,000 U.S. residents at midyear 2016, a decline of 3.4 percent.

County and city jails held 740,700 inmates at midyear 2016. This was below the peak of 785,500 inmates in 2008, the year with the most jail inmates since 1982, when BJS began the Annual Survey of Jails data collection.

In 2016, jails reported 10.6 million admissions, continuing a steady decline since 2008, when there were 13.6 million admissions to local jails. On average, those admitted to jail in 2016 stayed 25 days. Admissions include all persons booked into a jail on a formal charge, repeat offenders booked on new charges, and persons sentenced to weekend programs and entering the facility for the first time.

Now before you get distracted by their word choices - all this "falling rates" and "decreasing population" talk STOP and just LOOK AT THOSE STAGGERING NUMBERS.

#1 229 inmates PER 100,000 U.S. residents at midyear 2016
#2 County and city jails held 740,700 inmates at midyear 2016
#3 In 2016, jails reported 10.6 million admissions, those admitted to jail in 2016 stayed 25 days.

Firstly let's grab this one stat = COST PER DAY to house an inmate: from the Federal Register

  • The fee to cover the average cost of incarceration for Federal inmates in Fiscal Year 2015 was $31,977.65 ($87.61 per day). MORE THAN I MADE LAST YEAR - fucking seriously!!
  • The average annual cost to confine an inmate in a Residential Re-entry Center for Fiscal Year 2015 was $26,082.90 ($71.46 per day).

State run facilities vary in cost per day and I will dive deeper into this in a later post but for the sake of this post and as on average the costs are not far off I will use that lower stat of $71 a day - give 'em the benefit of doubt here

  • 70% (443,000 persons) of the prison population are NOT convicted = $38,541,000 (YES MILLION) a DAY
    then add in:
  • average stay of 25 days - that is a staggering 963.5 MILLION or $1775 per person - a not even CONVICTED person

Now repeat after me:

What The Fuck?!

Do not forget jail stays cause people to lose their jobs, children, their credibility - even if you are never convicted but were merely arrested, these things happen. I have seen it many times with my own eyes. Now IF you are convicted there is ZERO hope for you afterwards but that topic I will cover all by itself later on.

Right there I wanted to showcase the amount of absolutely unnecessary money we spend imprisoning and punishing innocent Americans - let alone adding in the millions who are convicted and serving long term or life sentences.

Speaking of costs and money:

The PRIVATE Prison Industrial Complex

I will be dedicating an entire post to break down this conundrum. There are literally prisons that are operated solely as businesses. Don't see anything wrong with that? Well take your head outta your ass for a second and think about this - Private Prisons:

  • work like hotels - they need those beds full
  • have SHAREHOLDERS who's financial well being RIDES on these facilities success
  • can pick and choose which inmates they take - therefore controlling their "production costs", "maintenance fees" and what-not as to make as much profit off each human resident as possible
  • 3 top CORPS (MTC, GEO and CCA) rake in roughly $5 Billion (yes with a B) a YEAR

We've allowed the corporations to turn punishment into a business...who benefits from this? A BUSINESS wants their CUSTOMERS to RETURN...they NEED the customer to come back - and bring their friends with them!
And who is the CUSTOMER? The inmate.
These corporations are not the government - they DO NOT "care about us" -or the American people at all... not to say the government does either but some still live comfortably in their safety matrix so I figured I'd throw that in there.

Who ARE We Imprisoning?

Back to the Big Picture Model from PrisonPolicy.org :

This article also point out a very important part of determining how the stats above are categorized:

All of the offense data presented comes with an important set of caveats. A person in prison for multiple offenses is reported only for the most serious offense so, for example, there are people in prison for “violent” offenses who might have also been convicted of a drug offense. Further, almost all convictions are the result of plea bargains, where people plead guilty to a lesser offense, perhaps of a different category or one that they may not have actually committed.

Now look back at those drug offenders - that means most likely those non-violent drug offenders were in not involved in a larger crime - they are simply humans with a bad addiction. I will be touching on this travesty at a later date. The point is the system messes around with who did what and how, they charge people with crimes in the way that best suits their prerogative and trade conviction pleas like they work for Wall Street. Any one who would beg to differ - I personally know well over 20 individuals who's cases and charges were tampered with or "traded" between lawyers with barely any notification made to the defendant.

Kids will be Kids ..?

there are almost 7,000 youth behind bars for “technical violations” of the requirements of their probation, rather than for a new offense.

600 youth are behind bars for “status” offenses, which are “behaviors that are not law violations for adults, such as running away, truancy, and incorrigibility.”

REPEAT AFTER ME... WHAT in THE FUCK??

Children and teens make bad choices all the time - it is in their brain chemistry to do so! Their brains literally are NOT developed fully and they cannot use reasoning to properly assess future outcomes and consequences. This is scientifically proven and has been common knowledge for decades.

Yet we still continue to imprison, punish and permanently scar our youth for doing exactly what their brains and hormones are driving them to do. This is utter bullshit. Do you know how hard it is to break out of an institutionalized mind frame in your teens or early 20's ? The life style has been ingrained into their behavior and now there is no turning back - yet we continue to marginalize these young adults and blame them for being shaped by a broken system.

A Starter Video for those interested

  • Now this show is from 2012. The statistics used are from about 2008 - 2012 - which as I've read on the Bureau of Justice's website was some of the worst years and the percentages have been "declining" but it's still an interesting show with a lot of great information

I will be continuing on with my Series and exploring many aspects and topics related to the Prison Industrial Complex, next up will be "Welcome to the Matchine | Introductions are in order.

I hope this series will spark conversations here on Steemit and spread out into our own lives. Share these facts with people so they realize how huge this problem is for all Americans whether you're just a tax payer or simply a caring human being.

Since I read part 2 first, I thought it might be a good idea to go back a step:)

This is absolutely shameful and a travesty of general society as a whole, that this could be allowed to continue. Once you implement a system, that is mostly based on profit incentives as the main bargaining tool for peoples lives, then this is the exact and foreseeable result that was executed and planned for, by those who seek to profit from human misery. Not much different to big pharma.

You see, I can actually write something worthwhile in your comment section without trolling. I was however offended at your article and a particular note you made by shaming my ex girlfriend and her snake heads. That will be a hard one to get over...insert sad face here

hahaha I appreciate your most serious comment sir - she must be your ex-girlfriend for a reason? lack of eye contact I'm guessing ?? lol

anyways in all seriousness thanks for coming and checking out part one. It really is a failure of the system to serve the people. Money over everything has lead those on top to trade citizens like cattle in whatever trap they can corner them in and for millions that corner is in a jail cell. It's absolutely shameful.

Of course...where have you been living, under a rock? Or just a stone? Sorry couldn't help myself this time:)
I know, I know....super lame

LOLOLOL

Well done @amariespeaks! This entire system is corrupted, born of black magick and is rooted in Commercial Law of antiquity instead of Natural Law of harm none. There are 3 entities that have aligned together to control and dominate all life here. Fear is their weapon and the vibration from which they operate. Fear is the pattern...always. Each entity controls one of the three dimensions of physical, mental, and spiritual and is marked by an obelisk. Everything can be tied back to them and they are hiding more than they are revealing.

Washington D.C. controls the physical dimension through sheer brute Force: manpower, aggression, technology + weaponry
City of London controls the mental through financial power. The use and manipulation of money sets limits to what someone or a company can accomplish. Fungibility is a very important factor in that if a people can be made to believe that something is valuable then they can establish control.
Vatican City controls the spiritual dimension here and all churches in the world have acknowledged that the Vatican is the ultimate authority on spiritual matters. The pope has declared himself to be the vicar of Christ and they've issued papal bulls that have claimed all souls, land, and property for the Catholic church

@mindszai thank you for reading and yes you are 100% correct in identifying the 3 powers. I have heard that myself a few times in podcasts and articles and I must say the evidence speaks for itself. They are clearly using fear as the driving force. Hopfeully the truth is coming - sooner rather than later.

This system has always enraged me! I will repeat after you... WHAT THE FUCK? It’s outrageous. I’ll look forward to your next article, thx for sharing!

thanks @pretty.dorky - I've always been enraged by the system too but the more I'm digging the worse it gets.. so many tentacles wrapped around different aspects of life to ensure these prisons stay full and those too scared to question the laws and rules will remain silent because they don't want to end up in jail.

I'm glad you liked it :)

Congratulations for such an in depth study and presentation to us all of such a terrible crime against humanity @amariespeaks Its absolutley disgusting that human beings are treated like this. Modern day slavery!

@happysmileyman its most definitely is modern day slavery - the work these inmates do inside makes tons of money for the corps and yet they are paid pennies for their labor and as soon as they're released they can't even get hired even though they've been working on the inside for however long... it's a true shame.
Thanks for reading and taking the time to comment! :)

Unfortunatly I read up on this shocking not so well known knowlege many years ago, it also coincides alongside the very deliberate dumbing down of society! etcetera etcetera.
Love and peace will find a way
Wishing you many blessings @ameriespeaks 😊

yesss the unfortunate mass dumbing is another huge epidemic.. but you're right love and peace will always break through :) namaste my friend :)

Namaste 😊

Excellent write-up! Thanks for delving into this topic on the prison system. I look forward to the other parts!

@fadedhistory thank you - I'm glad you enjoyed it and took the time to comment 😊 It's a huge issue that more people should wake up to. I hope you'll enjoy part two when it comes out.

One of the first articles I read on steemit was by @larkenrose talking about his fight against the IRS to get clarity on the tax system and its laws, and the evidence he presented in his book gives some insight into the mindset of those that create and enforce these laws. It is as you say probably just the tip of the iceberg, and I will be comparing this to the Australian system to see whether the same problem exists but in a slightly different form.

ohh yes I follow @larkenrose as well and this is quite the same type of iceberg as the irs. We have thugs running the US in all directions meanf to entrap ans enslave us and if we don't listen well you're a criminal and deserve to be in jail.. 😂 @plushzilla check out those corporations geo group and mct because I'm pretty sure they have branches in a few countries.
Australia was originally a prisoners island, no? They must have their claws in it.. or perhaps the crown.. maybe the crown leases out these corps.. I haven't gotten that deep yet lol just thoughts! Let me know if you discover anything.

I know that there are also a few people that are fairly passionate about social justice and corporate social responsibility. @misslasvega is one that I think of, and the people over at @familyprotection as well.

By the way, have you seen the Esoteric Smart Media Token that @flauwy is proposing? I think it would be right up in your alley!

https://steemit.com/smt/@flauwy/the-esoteric-smart-media-token-let-s-bring-magic-back

@plushzilla thanks for all the awesome info! Im gonna check out those Steemians and that link! I hadn't heard of that token yet but it sounds exciting! 🙏🙏

You were supposed to let me know when you come out with this piece! Grrr. I'll come back once I read this one. Wanted to leave a quick note.

oohh I'm so sorry! Head is in 20 places lol well SURPRISE!! It came out way longer than intended and I had to break it up into even smaller pieces. There's just so much to cover. Part 2 to follow.. eventually lol

Truly amazing job. I'm so proud of you to put this together sister! FUCK IS JUST A WORD BUT CRIMES OF OUR GOVERNMENTS AND DEEP STATE IS UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE! on that sad note...

...they try to build a prison for you and me baby.....

FUCK THE SYSTEM!
FREE HUMANITY!

yeesss!! I'm not a huge fan of system of a down but this song is one that I always thought was genius! More people need to wake up to this travesty.. I hope articles like this series will help at least spark conversations and make people question why it is this way. Maybe it will even bring a much needed change...? who knows! but I' glad you read it and liked it :)

In a corrupt system, a person can only do so much. Keep informed, those who will listen, keep informed those who practice corruption that they Know they are watched, and support those who fall through the cracks in the system and just get pushed aside and diminished by the systems grandiose views, which rarely include 'real' individuals, but just numbers. Their individuals are those from whom they suck, and when, where and how much. One mustn't rock the boat, and the Gov't will 'never' admit to wrong-doing involving an individual because lawyers could then sue for millions$.😕 In our smaller country, I would praise your bravery, and quietly warn you that 'the status quo' will take notice of you and list you as undesirable or troublemaker. Keep on keeping on. 😇

I'm sure I've been marked as an undesirable already! LOL I'm sure the U.S. does this kind of social crediting system just in secret.. for now! lol soon they will roll it out just like China. Pretty scary but I'll keep voicing my concerns until I can't talk anymore :-) what else can I do?? at least I know in my heart that I'm speaking up in my own small way.. here in the U.S. these law makers are in exact opposition on their "laws" and no one has done anything.. look at the APEC treaty. That got signed and is being used to breach the Geneva convention - yet no lawyers are jumping up and suing anyone.

Thanks for reading @simon62 - you have brought up many things into my mind! I may have a follow up post about social crediting and the blacklisting of individuals lol

Most people are afraid @amariespeaks. They have an income, they might not like the actions of their Co, or superiors, but as long as they personally are not faced with dirty choices, it can all slide, cos I'm all right jack, is the delusion that they want. Being afraid to be honest is the one delusion that allows all bullies to get away with their bullying. No one wants to have to argue their innocence or explain the sensible stance before the majority that does not want to see. -if I don't look, I will not see anything wrong and will not be disturbed or have to speak out against the powers that allow me to be comfortable -
I'll put a poem by Thomas Moore in my blog post today, for your use. Copy/paste and print, and plaster on your fridge or post on your time-line. He died for his beliefs. 😊

thanks @simon62 I will definitely check out the poem. And you're so right.. people would rather bury their heads in the sand because at least they're "safe" and "separate" from all these injustices. It's very concerning 😒

A quote in one of yesterday's blog posts, by Harold Thurman Whitman. 😇

very fitting! and also fits my it takes a village post.

The difference, I believe Ed be that speaks, is that there is a list of members one might have. On one side is those who have opinions and comments, but no discernible informative posts, and the other side are a community that gives. They write posts of an informative style, and their comments add to dialogue and information available, rather than away from it. Many posts on steemit are but a photo, and even it, however 'nice' a scene is non-informatiin. The cameraman does not name the scene, nor say it was taken in a westerly, or southerly direction from the knoll,or road that runs from a to b. I've seen photos of food, that says how delicious, but has no recipe, or no method, and even no location as to 'is it Italian, Venetian, whatever¿' The site seems to get more shallow, the further I look. It seemed a great idea three months ago, but there seems no distinction between those chasing a dollar, and those after information, expansion and learning. I see lots of competitions but to what end? Whatever is posted is lost as the numerous global village, swamps the site with shallowness immediately and after six days archives. The tags five, are too many or not enough. This is where the robots would be useful, in a steemit app to research the archives and divide them into a workable index. Until the money or whales or both pressure the IT geniuses into indexing, the whole steemit site is nothing but an enormous well from which very little can be retrieved, because the tag system is not set up for information retrieval but for money earning. Ridiculous.

@simon62 I agree there has to be a better way to catalog info and also to combat shallow posts. I personally never upvote photos unless there's a story along with it but I'm only one person. The platform has great potential but it is crowded with nonsense and people just in it for the payout... much like real life. It can be rather discouraging, to say the least. But it may get better - I hope it does!
