The Old Dog Asks: I Didn't Click The Button Would You?

in privacy •  6 years ago

Every day I'm becoming more and more aware of both data mining and privacy concerns. I've decided to be a little more careful with my internet habits.

Example One:

A short while back I was in the process of changing my personal e mail address. During the process of signing up for a new gmail address I was struck by their invasive terms of service. Try reading it and see if it makes you nervous or not! I bailed out at the point where it asked me if I accepted their terms! I didn't click the button, would you?

I opted instead for the end to end encryption offered by protonmail.com

Example Two

While catching up on the latest news I was presented with a link to an interesting looking article. Before allowing me to read it look at these terms of service that they expected me to agree to:

After reading the above I decided that I could manage without reading that particular article.

What About You?

  • Are you becoming more aware of the invasive nature of "free" email and search engine services?
  • Are you doing anything to protect your privacy?
  • In what other areas would you suggest that more internet caution be used?

Thanks for following me on my travels and I look forward to sharing my adventures with you.

Note: If you're waiting for the results from my last two contests please be patient with me. I'm travelling in Italy right now but I hope to post them when I'm back home at the end of this week.

Until next time,

I have not yet taken Yahoo's "oath" - and I think I won't be. And I refuse to have a barcode, public, or private key of any kind tatood to my wrist or forehead. Just sayin' :-)

Yes the tattoo is way too invasive. I’ll opt for the chip implant! ;)

@kus-knee,
Until today I didn't aware about this! I think it's the time to change my personal email address also! Thank you for this information! Personally I didn't read such Terms and Conditions! I think it's a huge risk of course!

Cheers~

You're right!

I think that these companies are selling our data to the big corporations to target us with their ads @kus-knee
Not to mention allowing US government to peek at our datas too including the contents of emails.

It's scary!

Hi OldDog! Hope you have great time in Italy ;-)
There is nice documentary about social media and the companies who dominate the internet. It's called The Cleaners.
Here is the trailer:

Ciao ciao!!

Thanks for the link. I’ll have a look!

It is possible to encrypt your data through the secure connection of a VPN. But there are other ways to protect your data and make sure your conversations stay private. Secure (and often free) instant messaging software like AirWatch Chat, Crypocat or Pidgin and Adium will be able to code the content of your messages so that they are only readable for the recipient. Ditto for your emails, which you can encrypt the content using secure mailboxes like Cyphr, TorGuard or SecureMail.

Another good thing to do to protect your data online is to choose your passwords. If many users just use the same for all the platforms they use, it is better to go through a password manager (which are often free and available in open source) in order to generate a unique for different sites or applications that you can use. You will then only have to remember that of your password manager, who will be responsible for storing all others away from prying eyes (like keyloggers).

Good advice!

You are right, it is becoming more and more difficult to protect your information and many well-known services on the Internet are increasingly asking for your personal data. It is evident that someone really wants to control everyone and always! Thank you @kus-knee

Yes it is evident!

That same concern was shared with a group of colleagues these days! I told them that some magazines or pamphlets had arrived at my ofc for some pages that needed my opinion. Where did those pages get not only my work address but also the information that might interest me. I'm also surprised when Google tells me which places I've been and what I normally visit, not to mention that I go to many stores and they already know what I've bought, the quantities and when I should buy them again. When this happens to me, I immediately remember 1984 from Orwell and the big brother. We never thought it would happen, but we are being monitored by the big eye of technology and worst of all, we ourselves are providing the information they need. Thank you for your interesting post today, @kus-knee.

Your personal experience is interesting!

@ kus-knee hello dear friend, I hope you are enjoying your stay in Italy.
I share your opinion every time they are more invasive with respect to our privacy, I think that what we work online we are very exposed to it
I wish you a happy stay

So true!

You are absolutely right! Free email and search engine services represent of the aggressive and invasive nature.
Now it is very difficult to protect privacy. I think it's a scares for each of us:(
I wish you a pleasant trip to Italy:)
(Would be great if you take a look of my latest drawings;)

Yes aggressive is a good word!

Great choice. Often, free emails cost much more than paid encrypted.

So true!

I don't use yahoo
but I wonder about what do you think of duckduckgo?

Have a safe trip Old Dog, regards to the bird
I hope you're safe from phishing

Take care!

I’ve been using goduckgo for about 6 months now. Actually I don’t like it as much as Google but I prefer it for privacy.

"Free" always comes with a price!

True!

@kus-knee, If we carefully see then in my opinion, in one or other way, the whole Internet is Controlled by few and in my opinion the most of the Technology aspects tracks us. And yes, sometimes it really gives the weird feeling after reading the Terms and Conditions and before clicking the Accepting button. And now we are still not reached to an complete form but in my opinion in future who knows what technology will going to establish. Some conspiracy theorists says that Technology is introduced to control Human Beings.

Wishing you an great day and stay blessed. 🙂

Thanks for your interesting insight!

Welcome. 🙂

Indeed I too am concerned about privacy and for a long time have felt invaded. Even if they assure you that you are protected, I do not believe them as the government has many ways to use and sell info and the world has become so Orwellian. Thanks @kus-knee

So true!

Damn, that is SKYNET in the making! What if Google really is SKYNET in disguise?

Indeed!

I am currently in England and it's amazing how many more requests and permissions are asked here whilst in USA it just happens. We click, they get the info, done and dusted. I like that they ask , however, if I say no then I can't access the site, so not sure it's really 'permission' or not.

Have fun in Italy!

You're right......at least they're asking.

Every company is behind the privacy now and keeping it safe is becoming hard this just shows how the data has become the gold of digital world

You are right on target with that statement!

Yes it scares me to. You can't make a move without intrusion. Thanks for the heads-up and protonmail.com choose.

It is difficult!

It' s difficult to protect our privacy today, but I try the same.... sometimes also renouncing and not accepting the terms :-(

You are smart!

It's for my privacy... I accept only if I really need something ;-)))

así es amigo tienes razón hoy en día es muy difícil mantener la privacidad ten una feliz noches @kus-knee

You are correct!

very intiristing my frend
